Anybody doing any spring planting?

I just ordered some native perennial forb and grass mixes from Turner Seeds. The forbs will cover the majority of my main hunting area, while the grass mix will be planted along the edge of the tree line (hopefully creating a visual barrier).

My plan is to lightly disk the two acres, harrow smooth, broadcast seeds, and then pack it down with a lawn roller. Ideally, this will all be done the day before our next good rain.

Fingers crossed, I'm excited to see how it turns out.

I'm going to do 2 acres in some sort of spring plot but won't be free until April

Till it up, broadcast and drag - also planting about 10' wide strip down my fences of Egyptian wheat for a screen

Have a place out in Atascosa too, wanting to try our luck on our first food plot. Any recommendations on what will grow through the winter and when do you start seeding?

For the winter, I assume you are looking at an annual plot? What equipment do you have?

Slight chance of rain in the Atascosa County forecast. Should I try to get some oats in the ground this week?

Only if you want to feed the red ants.

Well that's the conundrum. I have a window of opportunity to spread some seed. Hate to waste the money. The time on the tractor is therapeutic so no issue there. Need some rain!

I'm holding off on mine for now. We haven't had rain in almost 40 days.

Same here. I have Bob oats and Elbon rye sitting in the barn just begging to be planted, but I'm not broadcasting anytime soon - according to the weather

Put mine in yesterday in Blanco county. I figured with rain in the forecast for the whole week it's now or never. Dusty as hell using the disc on ground that hasn't seen rain in almost two months. Planted oats, winter wheat and rye grass. Just need some freaking rain.

I broadcast and mowed over my plots 3 weeks ago. Going to broadcast more oats saturday as I assume all the cereals have been eaten. Hopefully the smaller seeds like clover and radishes are still there.

Same here, except I went with oats as the main attractant while outlining the treeline and fenceline with Elbon rye.

Confirmed rain today, just need a few more days of on/off rain to make sure it gets a good soak.

Do yall use granular (or liquid) lime prior to planting or just plant and then fertilize after growth?

I usually will throw some cheap granular fertilizer in it after it come up. I don't put a ton of money into it because the deer just mow it down pretty good and I have never been able to get much height to whatever I plant. I do want it to work and the deer definitely utilize it but it's about my taxes/wildlife plan as much as it is the deer.

Depends on your soil. Mine is decent, so I usually just plant and let it ride. Different plants like different PH levels, so liming depends on your soil's current PH, and what you are trying to plant.

Will probably toss some nitrogen out when I plant saturday.

I planted 200lbs of Bob Oats on Wednesday of last week, and received rain the following morning. I'm headed back up tomorrow. Should I plan to put down some triple 13 fertilizer or wait until I see more growth?

Secondly, should I apply a different fertilizer to make them pop?

What does your soil test show is required? All the form does is make it more readily available. The quantity of Calcium required to neutralize acidity does not vary.

Haha no clue. It's my buddy's place and he wants to try a clover food plot. He talked to the neighbor who said the soil is **** in Pearsall and needs lime. That's about the extent of what I know but I figured I'd ask the more knowledgeable people on this board
