So what all do you plant? Always curious as I've never done one but I'd like to try one of these days

Little emoji shouldn't have been popcorn. On a phone and guess I didn't look before posting

Got mine planted here in Grimes County just before the rain hit.

What kind of return do you guys see on your food plots? Had a wildlife conservationists come out to our place and he said if there's enough rain to grow food plots then there's enough to grow natural browse. I don't know enough about either so honestly asking.

Valid point but the deer will still use the areas with an abundance.

The deer at my place just mow it down as soon as it comes up. I'm not sure how much it helps but it's part of my wildlife plan so I do it more for the taxes. It does seem to attract some deer though. I just wouldn't expect any dramatic height for the food plot.

Are there crops for a food plot that would be considered "baiting" if you hunted dove or other migratory birds over that field?

You can plant whatever you want. Just can't manipulate it.

For dove, you can certainly manipulate food plots. Shred the browntop or big german millet, etc. You can even hunt over a disced and dragged fall food plot containing oats/wheat/winter peas, etc.

.5 acre of iron & clay cowpeas. First time planting anything seriously, but I've been pleased with the results.

Seems like they're getting browsed on pretty good, but also looks like plenty made I through the initial growing phase.

You just mix all the seeds together and plant them? Or do you separate them?

I would love to do food plots on our place, but the damned cows would destroy them long before any deer ever got a shot. And i really have no desire to stretch fencing all over the place.

As docb said, it's part of a wildlife mgmt plan. It's fun to do, doesn't cost much, and (if it rains) provides some added nutrition to the deer that have had a helluva droughty summer.

Gracias.

And reading the information on ducks and baiting I find it interesting that you could plant a field with some kind of grain but never harvest or manipulate it and just flood the field and it would be consider OK for duck hunting.

I get why they have the laws but they seem somewhat arbitrary and nonsensical at times.

Couldnt sleep here at the lease Went out at 11 oclock at night with a hand held broadcaster and did a other 100lbs of beardless winter wheat. There are more mule deer at the lease house so i may just hunt here when the season starts here in Briscoe Cty

We planted three weeks ago at my deer stand and not a single sprout of anything 150lbs of winter wheat and 40 lb the food plot mix from Tractor Supply I flushed two coveys of quail putting it out and my tiller broke They probably ate it Supposed to rain the week

Yeah, it's a little odd. The assumption has always been that some big money duck clubs had some pull when the laws were written many years ago.

To make it even more interesting, you can manipulate it if it's natural regrowth of previously planted feed. But not if it's growing from seed you planted this year.

Here's one of my holes. Regrowth of barnyard grass down low and jap millet up high. All I did was remove the smartweed that took over last spring, then very slowly add water to it. The germination rate was crazy. Seemed like 100 sprouts in a 1" square. Once established- fertilize, keep it wet, and keep the pigs out and that's it. Only thing left is more water. No reason to manipulate it. The birds and weather will have it all beat down to open water by mid winter. You'd have to hire a work crew to get this much bait spread but oddly this is legal and a sack of feed isn't.

Don't have a tractor or implements. Put down my plot seed as we were clearing using a skid steer and mulching head. Started raining as we finished. Pretty pleased with it considering the improv.

This. King Seeds in San Antonio (Aggies) make a good mix that I plant about every other year. Plant it by grain drill and sometimes have to irrigate it with a Water Reel depending on rain.

I think this is 100% accurate for spring / summer plots. I plant those for cover and weed suppression. In the winter my plots are the only green food source in the area. Makes a huge difference in how close to home the deer will stay. The cattle grazed pasture is all dead come December.

Truly native pastures might be a different story but there are few of those left

These two photos are the current state of my early plant of Japanese Millet. We had a ton of growth early, but then the drought took hold. First it changed the water level so that the cows could get after it. Second, it dried out the soil.

These pathetic stragglers are all that's left.

The bright green is all millet, and you can see how much water we've lost even since this planting.

It's been a rough year to make this work in N TX.

We are on our second year of planting Triticale in the fall. Really hoping for a good rain this week to get it growing. We let the deer eat it until February 1 and then rotate sheep onto the plot. The deer don't seem to mind it at all.

The iron & clay cowpeas died off after the cold snap at the beginning of the month. But something green has recently been coming up in its place and the deer are loving it.

Does anybody know what it is?

I didn't plant rye though so I'm not sure why that would be growing.

And just to be clear, are you referring to cereal rye or rye grass?

This is mine this year. Came up really well but I doubt it gets much height as the deer usually just mow it down. It does attract deer that like to snack on it.
