How long do you want to ignore this user?
I know this is the OB and this is a little off topic, but I figure someone would know the answer to this. Does anybody know if they test both eyes at one time or do they test individually? Thanks in advance.

Last time I took the test it was one of those machines that you peered into and you read it. It wasn't you reading a chart across the room.....i think.

But I mean, yeah if you can, bring both eyes.....

I just did this with both of my teenagers to get their permits. They did:

Both eyes
One eye
The other eye

And it was a chart on the wall

A year ago, Brazos County had the machine that you peer into and read a line.

Thanks for the responses. I wonder if this varies by DPS office? For the machine, does anyone remember if it is both eyes at once or one at a time? Asking for an older person I know who had some sight loss in one eye due to shingles. Thanks in advance.

They should just tell them they are partially blind in one eye. That shouldn't effect anything.

When I took mine in Brazos County last year, it was very quick. Both eyes simultaneously and I'm pretty sure the DPS employee heard nothing I said.

Disagree with this. Law is, if it's there it must work. If one doesn't work well I'd leave it in car.

Been a few years but also had the machine reading with both eyes. Had to read 5 sets of letters. I got 4 but couldn't make out the 5th, so I failed. Dammit

I take my elderly mom every 2 years now to Bryan. The last time they had a handheld chart with 4 letters/numbers on it and the attendant took each customer to the end of the counter and had them read it at about 15 feet, covering one eye and then the other.
We had been sitting so we could watch the process for about 15 minutes prior and Mom said, " Well, I think I have it memorized."

Took mine in Hempstead. They just had me read a row of large letters that weren't too far away.

I remember thinking that if my blind self could see it anybody could.

About 7-8 yrs ago I took my wife's grandfather (who was 96 at the time) to get his license renewed. Yes, I had to DRIVE him to get his license renewed.

He had macular degeneration amongst a host of other health issues. I make him write all that stuff on the form, he's pissed off at me for it and I don't care.

We get up to the front, the lady reads over every thing and says, "alright honey, can you tell me that first big letter at the top?" "Sure can, Z." "That'll do! You passed."

It's not even the vision of old folks that has me concerned when driving. It's more their slow response time. I'm nervous as hell any time I ride with my 72 year old father. And his vision is fine.

This. Just did it Wednesday with my son.
He missed nothing with the right eye then 2 with the left and 2 with both. The women failed him. I told him he should have memorized the first attempt.

Generally, starts at the top with an E! I memorized the entire chart. Being a smart-ass, when I took the test, I turned my back to the machine and called out the letters. Sadly, my license now requires I drive facing the back seat. While I can't see where I am going, I have a birds-eye view of where I've been.

Correct. I am 70, see well, and response time is fine. Problem I have is sexting while I drive.

When I die, I want to go quietly in my sleep. Just like my grandfather. Not screaming and yelling like the rest of the people in the car.

Mine still says he wants to go by having a heart attack in bed and someone giving him a reason to have one.

Last week in Sherman TX, they simply held the chart at 10' away and had people read line 5 with one eye covered, and then with the other only repeating the line backward.

One could conceivably pay attention to the process while sitting and waiting, then pull up a standard eye chart on their phone an memorize the appropriate line before heading to the counter. At least that's what the lady sitting near me seemed to be doing. She passed…

Does Texas have a rule that if you bring in proof of good Vision from an ophthalmologist you can bypass the vision test? My eye doc in Utah does a lot of these, so he guild out a form with my biographical information, does the eye test and then e-mails the results to the Utah Drivers License Division, and they are good with that and don't require a vision test until it's time for renewal.

Having proof from an ophthalmologist reminded me when I went for my physical prior to being drafted. Went through all the various stations and tests and at the end they call out your name and whether you were qualified for the draft and said your draft board will be in touch with you in xx days (I suppose a letter with your classification). Person after person ahead of me was disqualified. When it came my turn, they said qualified.

Many people had notes from their doctor giving one thing or another (such as fainting spells) that was a problem with them, I didn't know about that. My lottery number was 12 so I was going to get drafted but then they stopped the draft. This was near the end of Vietnam, and I don't think they were doing much but going through the motions.

Yes.

Edit: I don't know if there are certain designation (Dr. type) requirements, but a letter from someone qualified is sufficient.

Insist renewed last month.

They checked each eye individually. I did not have both eyes checked at the same time.

I was concerned. I don't wear glasses or contacts, but it's been a few years since I've seen the optometrist and probably need a persciption now.

Anyway, they asked me to do one eye at a time. On my left eye they made me redo the test.

Thanks for all the replies. Does anyone know what actually happens if they fail you? Will they ask a bunch of questions or just tell you that you failed and need to see an eye doctor? I know there is some form they have on their website for the eye doctor to fill out. Thanks in advance.

I just had to do this. They tested individually. One of my eyes was significantly worse than the other… she was very lenient.

I had monovision LASIK in 2000 where dominant eye was corrected for distance and other eye for reading. Never realized the DL still had correction required code. I had cataract surgery a little over a year ago and see great. I renewed in New Braunfels a couple of weeks ago. They checked both open, then each individually but she just held up a chart. My new license removed the restriction.

With that said, has anyone with the restriction, ever been stopped and asked about their vision by the officer? I've got several friends with Comal County Sheriff Office. They say they've never asked anyone.
