Brother is looking for a golden, preferably with hunting genetics.

Have any breeder recommendations? Closer to DFW the better, thanks.

Tracey Garner. Edom, TX. I currently have 2. Outstanding, gorgeous dogs. Block heads. Blonde color. Wonderful temperament. My first from her lived almost 14 years. She's a very reputable breeder…not a puppy mill. Goldens are her life. Others on here have bought from her.

Another Tracey Garner Goldie!

I hope she is still breeding Goldies. She may have taken a break.

Good luck getting her to respond.

We got Cooper from Red Diamond and he is a great family dog, not so much of a hunter. Maybe with big training he would be, but he doesn't have the super strong retrieval desire. Otherwise, best damn dog ever.

Katian Kennels. We have one of Katie's and she is an amazing dog. ETA: they are field dogs. But they are also great around the house. Maggie will retrieve all day and loves going hunting, but she absolutely loves just being with her people.

Maggie looks great! Is she ready to get some ducks?

I actually have puppies available for once lol…with only a few weeks wait instead of several months!

She is! Hoping to get on some in November.

Eta: Natalie and I just looked at the pics of the pups They look awesome. We will probably be getting in touch in the next couple of years. Lucy turned 15 this year. We are hoping she keeps trucking along.

Katie, fancy seeing you here! Have you heard anything from the Foundation people?

My 4 year old son and I have been wanting to get a dog, and I've been looking at Golden Retrievers or Goldendoodle or possibly lab or labradoodle. Not looking for a hunting dog. Just a good companion for my young son and I. A good family dog. I have a decent back yard and good neighborhood for taking walks. Question, is there any reason or advantage with paying the high price to high end breeder if hunting traits is not a requirement? I'm mainly interested in temperament amongst people and other dogs.

The advantage is you kinda know what you're going to get. Low price is a crap shoot. Reputable breeders will not breed dogs with bad genes. They will be tested for all sorts of genetic traits that are not desirable, to ensure the pups don't have them. They also will know the traits of the parents well, so you can make sure your pup will fit your home. If you want a sloth, you won't be happy with a hyper turbo dog. Free dogs are a big question mark. Now, you can mold most pets into what works for you both, but it can be a lot of work. Buying one that fits is much easier, but you pay for the convenience.
Get a real golden, not a crossbreed. And if you want a lazy one that is great with kids, look at diamondred or red Diamond. Whatever. Google will get you there.

I'm happy to pay for the traits that I prefer. I'm just new to the process so asking a few questions. Definitely don't need a super high energy turbo dog because even though I work from home alot, I would feel bad leaving a high energy large dog at home for 8+ hours when I do go into the office.
I guess I just tell the breeder the traits I'm looming for and they tell me which puppies (lineage) is the best fit that they have?

Also, why a pure golden vs a goldendoodle? In the limited research I've done, folks seem happy with temperament of the doodle crosses.

Both goldens and poodles usually have laid back easy going characteristics. The advantage is doodles is they are highly likely to be hypoallergenic and don't shed. Goldens are shedding machines.

Because people like to hate on "designer breeds". Their patronizing dismissal of designer breeds make them feel like they are OGs of dog owners. They don't seem to care that significant issues like allergies are a reason to not get a pure breed.

Then you have the "adopt a dog" is the only way folks who will crap on anyone who pays for a dog and ignore the fact that you immediately inherent potentially significant issues that can't be reversed.

Bottom line is that no one should poo poo whatever path a dog parent takes. Dogs are incredible friends/family and none of that **** should matter.

I have loved all my dogs, but given our current circumstances, our golden doodle could not be more perfect.

It's all personal opinion. I think "doodles" are ugly and Goldens look good (field golden specifically and not the huge bodied, show looking Goldens). It all comes down to what you prefer. My field golden checks every box I had. Labs didn't. Doodles didn't. Shorthairs didn't. Just gotta go with what you like.

No different than my crocs I wear. A handful of people think they are ugly, but the vast majority of knowledgeable, smart, cool, badass people know crocs are cool.

I can't imagine taking a doodle into a creek bottom full of cockleburs. But cockleburs come out of the coarse golden hair pretty easily. My dogs have always been able to remove most of them themselves.

My recommendation is not to leave one alone near a bag of ridiculously expensive beef jerkey.

The disadvantage is you ruined a great breed with a poodle

Actually recent vet studies are showing problems with over breeding goldens. Their life expectancy is being reduced and early analysis is increase in genetic problems. Cross breeding actually helps the dogs. Poodles have very few inherited problems so then strengthen the genetics.

I'm a retriever snob, never had anything else, but I'd have no problem taking a doodle any day. Those guys are alright!

For what you are looking for, stay away from a lab. I have had both golden and labs. I love labs and they are great dogs, but they are also hyperactive weapons of mass destruction until then are 3-4 years old. For a calmer good family dog go with a golden retriever.

I have also had a golden doodle and golden retrievers. Besides looks…a golden doodle looks more like a poodle than a golden retriever…I have found that golden doodles are also more neurotic and less calm than a typical golden. Of course poodles in general are more neurotic and high strung than goldens, so that makes sense.

Definition of high energy right here… but if I say "load up" or "outside", it's amazing how fast he can get to the door from this position.

Unfortunately, goldendoodles are not always to be hypoallergenic. If they have more poodle genes, yes, they can be hypoallergenic and/or low shedding. If they have more golden genes, they will not be hypoallergenic. There is no way to know if the specific pup gets more genetics from mom or dad. So, it's a big gamble.

Breeding is not the problem. However, senseless/uneducated breeding is the problem. Responsible breeders will have studied the lines and tested the parents to minimize risks such as early onset cancer, etc.

I did…just a couple of days ago… I hope they come through for your family!

I second the recommendation of Katian Kennels. Our newest Golden, Maizy, was studded by one of Katian's males (Nacho) with another casual breeder's female (Hazel) and evaluated by Katie before we picked her up. This is the best dog we have ever owned. She is 1.5 years now and has not had a destructive phase at all. She is allowed the run of the house when we aren't home and does well. Next time we are in the market, we will get one directly from Katian.
Here is Maizy with her older sister lurking in the background, not wanting to leave the porch and get her feet dirty.

Both of my girls are from Tracey as well in Edom. Best combination of family and hunting dog.
