Do you drink pickle juice before, or during the trip

Seriously that altitude will not hardly affect you.

Just get one of these. Surely it is worth the money.

I live at an altitude of 6800' and have many friends and family come visit (many who live at very low altitudes) and they stay anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Never once had someone have a problem or even complain of being more easily tired or winded when doing something active. And we typically take journeys to higher elevation. Only issue there was an elderly with COPD on oxygen already.

Drink all the water. That's really it.

Like most said, hydrate. Take baby aspirin a few days before departure if you are really worried about it. Limit alcohol consumption while acclimating.

I live over 5k elevation and I don't see too many issues with people visiting here from low altitude. Even at 6500 or so, that's not high enough to notice it that much. I agree that you want to hydrate more and not drink too much alcohol. Don't exert yourself too much and you should be fine.

You have to worry about AS way more when you're above 8,000ft, but 5,000 - 8,000 is still enough for some people to get very very ill. Our airport is at about 6,300 feet and people black out walking off the planes frequently. It all has to do with the baseline elevation that you're traveling. Houston or another sea level to 6,000+ ft is still a large strain on the body especially if you're dehydrated at take off, overweight, or have other health issues that stress the circulatory system.

What a croc of ***** Airplanes have the pressurization equivalent to around 8000 ft. Why aren't they blacking out all the time when ON the plane but only walking off if at your airport.

Cool story bro. Google it. And thanks for the perfect segue. They don't pass out on the plane because they aren't moving which creates a pooling of blood in the lower half of the body. Once you stand up and start walking you experience Orthostatic Hypotension and pass out. It's a common occurrence my friend and elevation has shown to exacerbate that effect.

Surprised you didn't know that and it's not a crock of **** either….

Edit to add: To the two people that starred that post, I suggest you read up on it as well.

It can cause very serious health complications like increased risk of stroke or cardiac arrest.

Sorry

Tandy don't listen to panda. He will have you wearing a mask which will surely affect your breathing at any altitude.

I never passed out wearing a mask. Not once. Shocking, I know

i'm heading up to almost 8800 ft this evening to do a 10 mile run. I'm sitting at 735 feet right now. I'm not going to do anything to prep.

I'm at 36ft and going back to 9,160ft tomorrow. I won't be prepping either. T&P to you.

When I was doing triathlons I read a few studies that heat training helps the body with being able to handle the altitude. But at 6700 I don't think you will have too much issues.

Just highlighting that what you posted is a total and utter crock of *****

Just because you don't like me, doesn't mean I'm wrong.

I've flown sea level to high elevation Hayden, Aspen, Jackson hole etc. many many hundreds of times, and never seen anyone hop off the plane and pass out or collapse on the ramp or in the terminal. I'm sure it's happened before but it's not common nor is it something you need to be worried about, unless you have a underlying health issue.

None of the links you posted prove you assertion that it happens "frequently" at your airport or any other airport at altitude.

Not sure how well they work, but OP could try using this for a few weeks.

I've flown over 3 million miles on flights of various duration and to many different altitudes. And all I can say is WTF?!

Real sudafed the first day. Keeps your sinuses open and prevents any sinus pressure issues.

I've looked into these after suffering through my first elk hunt years ago and the science doesn't show any real impact. It helps, to some extent, in your breathing strength but it does nothing to simulate a lower oxygen environment. You're still going to have the same battle at high altitudes training with or without this mask.

Outside of a hyperbaric chamber or prolonged acclimation period - not sure anything truly works. I will waste my money again on some MTN OPS high altitude vitamins though. Don't know that it worked last time but nothing harmful in the ingredients to deter me from taking them.

This thread has gone on way farther than it ever should've.

I have pretty severe asthma and I can't say I've ever had any problems at that elevation. 10,000ft? Sure, feel like I can't walk 20 feet.
