It looks like there is a digital only hunting license option this year. You log your harvest into the app and don't have to mess with the little tags

The digital option started in the 22-23 season, but yes, it's nice to have the option.

I used the digital last year. I decided against it this year. Anecdotes of game wardens showing up as soon as someone logged a kill.

It's likely going to be the future. But I'll resist the intrusion for awhile longer.

I'm not ready to jump on it yet either, but it wouldn't surprise me for it to be mandatory eventually.

Can the state force you to download their app? Still some people without smart phones. And a lot of people that have them but don't do apps.

A lot of duck hunters don't even carry their phones.

Making me go digital will mean I won't be "tagging" anymore deer. I will just go East Texas style.

There aren't requirements as to how precise your pin needs to be....that pesky neighbor? Yep that's where it was I think, never been much good at maps.

Don't you still have to tag the deer? Didn't I see someone last year say that you check in online after a kill but you also have to have some sort of waterproof paper with your info attached to the animal?

Yep, there you go. I just copied this from TPWD website under digital reporting. Read that last sentence.

Immediately upon take of a deer, turkey, or oversized red drum you must create a harvest report using the MTHH mobile or web app.
Download the MTHH mobile app prior to heading to the field to ensure the harvest report can be created, regardless of availability of data service.
For deer and turkey, a physical, handwritten document must be attached to the carcass.

Exactly. So why not just attach the paper tags?

it's also one of the reasons i thought it was stupid. let me do all of this digital logging and then go rip a piece a cardboard off a cereal box and write the **** on there as well.

or i'll take out my already made tag. cut the dates and be done with it.

you have to write the confirmation code on something. On the video they showed a piece of duck tape

Ya, efff that noise. The nice little white tag gets wired to my deer and turkeys. Won't ever do the digital license; unless the option is do it or don't hunt.

I heard that you will need to call Austin headquarters before pulling the trigger......they have a direct hotline to Brad, Jerry & Mitch

Still have to carry paper and pen to attach something to animal. This is a data grab for selling or enforcement of violations.

- Shot was heard at 7:30 am. Electronic tag is 8:00am. What took so long to tag your deer? Tagged it about the time I was at the property gate.
- You missed one duck on your digital app.

I ordered mine online. Went with the paper license. You can already get the electronic copy on the outdoor annual app. I don't deer hunt so the tag part isn't really an issue for me.

All you have to do is write a four digit confirmation number on a piece of tape and attach it to the deer. No personal information is required on the deer, that is submitted on the phone. I like that aspect that you don't have to deal with that small tag in the field. However, it gets more complicated if you hunt in an area without cellphone reception.

It will be interesting to see if you hear about game wardens actually using it to stalk hunters. I don't do anything illegal so I guess I shouldn't be concerned.

I used it last year to tag multiple deer, 2 in remote areas with no servie....it still gets time stamped and then gets loaded once you get service.

Used it on a red drum...but it never submitted even after multiple attempts. It still shows it as an unsubmited record that needs to be synced. At the bottom it says incomplete record. I did my part the app "failed" I am comfortable with how it stands.

Yes you just write the number on a homemade tag

In Gonzales County, and some others, you have mandatory doe harvest reporting. You must report any anterless deer taken during the four day doe season within 24 hours. You can do it on the app or the TPWD website.

Exactly. Though they might allow you to duct tape your phone to your deer.

This is a classic argument of the surveillance state. If you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to worry about.

Just ordered my second digital license. I found it easier than having to use paper tags AND the log on the back of the paper license.

digital saved me last season. I was literally in the stand when I realized I didn't have my paper license. I downloaded the app, found my license and was able to use it. Pretty easy process. So for someone like me who always has his phone on his person the digital license is an asset. I can see why someone wouldn't want it though. No way my uncles and grandpa would ever use one.

Did you have your DL, cuz if not, you're still SOL.

You have to carry ID with you to back up your license digital or paper.

Yes!

But that's kinda my point, during hunting season my DL stays in the little anti-static pouch with my hunting license.

I'd be less likely to carry my DL into the field if I didn't have anything else.

I guess I am weird......I carry both a wallet and a phone (also pocket knife, nail clippers, loose change and the occasional mini tape measure) everywhere I go

I have a small money clip wallet that goes in my front pocket. Only ID's credit cards and 20-30 $100 bills

If it's like last year, you use your digital tag....but you still have to put some sort of tag on the animal itself. Which defeats the purpose of a digital tag in the first place.

Plus...hard pass on putting pins on places for the GW to show up.

Yep.

Nothign to do with legal or illegal, everything to do with me just not wanting to mess with a GW in camp who's job is to find something they can cite you with if they are having a bad day, don't like something they saw or heard, etc. If he shows up, he shows up. But I"m not putting up a bat signal to get them coming either on principle alone.
