Our old lab has very bad hips, but chooses to lay on our hardwood floors instead of his bed during the summer (I assume because it's cooler). It takes him about a minute to lay down, and the sound of him crashing to the floor is painful (and can't be good for his hips), but that's still his preference. Are there any soft but still cool options for him? All the "cooling" beds I see on Amazon seem very similar to his current bed.

Have you looked at elevated beds?

We have used those and they work well if the dog can get used to it.

In my experience our pups don't care for the elevated beds when they are seniors. Does he have a good orthopedic bed?

Big Barker beds, expensive I know, but we got 3 for our giants and they are very happy (at least were, we're down to one pup now, was a horrible 2022). Love the removable washable covers and the waterproof liners. We dog sit my sisters little 50 pound mix sometimes, she brings his bed but he will hit the big barker and not even look as his bed when he's with us.

We have an elevated bed with a Serta dog bed on top of it. Our old lab will lay on it but still chooses to lay on the wood floors a lot of the time.

I have 2 of these for an older dog. Spends 80% time on it.

I have an old dog that has ignored 4-5 dog beds I've attempted over her 13 years. I tried one more time last year and got one with a bolster which she loves. If you've only tried the plain rectangular beds so far, maybe give a bolstered bed a try.

Get a cozy cave. I've got a GSP that used to sleep in our bed. I can't even get him to come up to our bed anymore cause he loves his so much.

Very good, but he doesn't use it when it's hot outside. I'm loving all these suggestions!

Why waste your time trying all these bed recommendations. Have you ever considered hip replacements? I know a guy who can help!

You could look into a Bedjet. Around $450 but would definitely keep him cool. The gal that lives a few doors down has danes and has it on their bed now that we are near 90 degrees up here in CO.

I'm sorry about your 2022.

I found my older dogs liked it when I put a folded cool sheet on top of their normal bed when it was warmer. You could prob even throw a couple of cheap sheets in the freezer to make them extra cool.

Thank you, wasn't fun but as we all know too well it's a fact of life as dog owners, no matter how bad it hurts in the end, all we can do is give them the best lives we can! Which is exactly what you're doing for your pup, looking for a good bed for a good dog.
