Sugarloaf Mountain bought by Tonkawa Tribe
A mountain in the southeast corner of Milam County has been bought back by a Native American tribe who view the place as sacred.
Sugarloaf Mountain is the highest point in Milam County just outside of Gause. On Dec. 12, the 60-acre plot was purchased by the Tonkawa Tribe of Oklahoma from private owners. A ceremony at the base of the mountain was held with Tonkawa officials, locals and others on hand.
It's more than a large hill with scenic views to the Tonkawa, though. It's where they believe their people started.
Preserving the area has been an almost 30-year effort from locals and other groups, and with this land back in their possession the Tonkawa have partnered with locals and the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail Association to turn the area into a historic park and share it with others.

"I think it's important for Texas to know there were Native Americans there, and not only that but they were abundant there," Tonkawa President Russell Martin said. "I think it's a part of history that's maybe been pushed to the side. I want the next generation to know. I want them to start embracing that and being a part of that and, hopefully, I want them to accept us. I want them to realize what happened. I think that part of history's been neglected. I absolutely want to share that with everybody there."

The peak of Sugarloaf Mountain is just under 500 feet high, but its views can take one back as it overlooks the Little River where the post oak savannah meets blackland prairie.

"You can go up there and you're looking out across the river bottom, you've got somewhat of an optical illusion to where you feel like you're so much higher than you really are," Gause resident Dave Cunningham said. "It's a dynamic view and to a lot of people, it's a real special place, and certainly to the Tonkawas."
