I see this comment posted in many forums in regard to a multitude of situations and I always wonder if the people that post it really "have" a lawyer.

The most recent thing I watched was that guy in Arizona talking to the cops that were inquiring about his FRT purchases. A huge majority of the comments were along the lines of "he said too much, and should've just said talk to my lawyer".

I've had a business lawyer that I've hired for that purpose in the past but in a situation where some feds came knocking, I'm not sure who I'd call. Do y'all "have a lawyer"? If so, how'd you get them and how do you know they'd represent you in all matters? If not, have y'all thought about this?

I have a very good personal friend who has a full time job at the state but if I need some quick advice I can call him. If I need actual work he would make a referral

Send lawyers, guns and money!

ETA, OP I think the phrase is just a saying most often uttered by those who'd end up having a court appointed attorney.

I'm married to "my" Lawyer

That said, if I needed one for a serious criminal matter, all you have to do is hire one.

Mark Metzger is a good friend. Anything with even the hint of criminality inquiry will be call my lawyer and it will be him.

Civil, depends on the matter. Too many areas of expertise there.

Never had to do it, but I think it is like a stripper. You just put a one dollar bill in their pocket and then they belong to you.

I'm a little fuzzy on all the details, but as long as Lalo didn't refer you then that should do the trick.

I used to have a friend of mine on retainer. Never needed him for more than advice, thank goodness.

I have a different friend who is who I refer to when I say "my lawyer". He would absolutely be my first call in any situation where I needed legal advice/representation.

Frankly, yes I think people should know whomever the "good" criminal defense lawyer is in their area.

As for actually "having my lawyer," TMK, no one short of billionaires actually has a full-time personal attorney.

I have a few clients that I act as personal counsel for. No matter the trouble, they call me and I find them the appropriate counsel.

This is kind of where I'm at, I guess. I have first hand access to a family law, medical malpractice, and corporate contract type lawyer that I assume would provide some solid referrals if I asked them.

Thomas J Henry ftw

Look at his ads....he's great. He dresses impeccably. Ha s serious "can do" look on his face. Has 5 locations and 300 attorneys on board...... He just can't add.

To him, $27 mil to client. $21 mil attorney fees and $1.1 mil expenses adds up to $50 mil ......IN BIG CAPITAL LETTERS

Stupid me, I thought it added up to $49.1 mil. I guess the 900K difference is chump change

Would one really want to hire an attorney that can't do simple addition?

Yep! That's him. Also was on the defense of several of the Waco Twin Peaks bikers that got their cases dismissed in

One of my best friends is a criminal defense lawyer in Ft. Worth, has also done a good bit of civil cases, I talk to him at least twice a week, so in that respect, yes I have a lawyer.

But, I also hear "talk to my lawyer" a lot in my day job and most people don't really "have" a lawyer'. They got divorced 15yrs ago and think they still have the same guy.

Edit: My friend also had a client from the Twin Peaks shooting but the DA at the time screwed that up from the beginning.

I would be willing to bet some cash that the "300 attorneys" that he advertises on TV are not employees of his firm but are independent lawyers that he hands the grunt work off to and collects a piece of the pie for doing absolutely nothing. A buddy had a Firestone tire blow out on the front of his pickup resulting in a crash with another vehicle. He contacted TJH about suing Firestone. I think Firestone had already been drawn into suits about this particular tire model. TJH handed it off to another gumshoe in CC.

I have always thought of needing lawyers as reactive, not proactive.

For example, if my dog bites your kid's face off I will hire a lawyer. I am not going to hire a lawyer just in case my dog one day decides to bit your kid's face off.

Outside of business, I personally have made it through life writing very few checks to lawyers and they were all regarding wills and trusts and such.

If I ever needed a lawyer, I would post the situation and location right here on this board and would have good competent representation in about five minutes.

I have lots of friends call me regarding legal situations that I can't handle. I'm always happy to refer them to someone who can. It pains me to see people hire lawyers who aren't really experienced in the particular area they're hired for. Lots of jack of all trades, masters of none out there. There shouldn't be a "retainer" or cost for just helping someone get to the right lawyer.

Thomas J. Henry is a joke of a lawyer - but a hell of a businessman, money maker. He doesn't really practice law - just markets (similar to Jim Adler...although Adler is a good guy). All those lawyers actually do work for him doing the grunt work and some actually do try cases. But of course he'll refer certain types of cases out - like complex products liability cases. Frankly, all lawyers (even PI lawyers) should unless they've got a lot of experience with those exact types of cases.

Anyway, I'm always happy to help anyone here find what they're looking for lawyer wise. And always happy to talk to see if I can help. I've talked to a lot of people from texags over the years regarding various legal issues and have only actually signed up a case or two that I might make a fee on.

TJH filed a $1.25B lawsuit for sex assault and received a default judgment, so he "won" a billion-dollar case (because D nor his attorney made an appearance). He advertised the hell out of receiving a $1.25B judgment but never collected a dime on it. The Texas Supremes amended our advertising rules so that we now have to show how much we collected on the referenced judgment in equal prominence and appearance as to the amount of the judgment.
