We had a huge oak in our yard that was struck when I was a kid. It splintered an area in the bark that was probably 3'x 2'. The tree lived another 25 years before wilt killed it.

No, but for whatever reason my middle child was sitting on the stairs when he happened. Dude basically teleported from the stairs to my lap

You should consider putting in cables instead of the straps. From the photos you posted see the deformation of the cambium from the strap digging into the tree. Plus the cables will last a lot longer than the straps.

Thanks for the comment. Saved the tree. Would a cable not dig into the tree as well? I would think more so since less surface area than a strap…
