They are auctioning off stuff from his estate later this month.

Edit: Those Colt 6 shooters will probably go for a lot more than the starting bid.

Did anybody else realize he helped write Brokeback Mountain? That's kinda disappointing....

I was in WF one time and saw him at dinner at McBrides Steakhouse. Waitress said he was a bit *****ly, I wasn't about to confirm her assessment. It was cool that they had Goodnight or Loving's, can't remember which, saddle hanging up.

That $1000-2000 estimate of the signed 1st edition Lonesome Dove seems low.

That's the price range you see for ones that weren't actually owned by McMurty.

Side rant....it has always driven me bonkers that Dead Mans Walk doesn't have the same cover design style as the other three books....or if there is a version out there, I've never found it. It looks so out of place on my bookshelf next to the others.

Thanks for posting this. I live fairly close to Vogt Auctions so will go by and at least look at these items.

McMurtry was pretty much a liberal putz, completely unlike the western books he wrote. I used to stop by Booked Up ( his bookstore with 500,000 volumes ) in Archer City 4 or 5 times a year on business travel. The ladies there told me on nearly every occasion to not talk to him if he came in and certainly don't ask for an autograph. Said he was surly to the max and did not like ordinary people. That is a direct quote. So, the one time I saw him in there I gave him the stink eye.
So three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar.................You can't convince me that's a coincidence.

Pointless addition to this thread: one of my friends in high school's dad was in the last picture show and Texasville.

His son James McMurtry is apparently cut from the same mold…not exactly personable. Good music, but a weird liberal dude. On his own FB feed he describes himself as an a-hole.

He takes pride in pissing off Trump voters and other conservatives, yet he still loves his guns. He took pride in shooting up a bunch of cans of Goya a couple of years ago. I like his songs. Heck, I would probably want his as a neighbor since he wants to be left alone. But he sure is an a-hole.

I saw him perform at Floore's about 15 years ago. Larry was there. He stood in the back, and no one dared talk to him.

Thinking some of those guns may be a little undervalued. Looks like market price on some of the shotguns, but if you throw in the previous owner they should jump up by at least 50%. Or maybe I don't know what they are really worth.

I wondered that too. A bear skull or whatever here or there is one thing, but that's a lot of skulls.

I have a bow and arrow set (sans quiver) that is very similar to Lot #253. Need to take some pics and post them here for the hive mind's thoughts.

I'd wager to bet that 90% of all artists (music, actors, writers, etc.) - probably higher than that realistically - are liberals. It comes with the territory of having the type of brain that makes one a good artist.

I'd be a lot happier if all of them would stay the F out of all politics and just sing or act or write or whatever, because that is where their talents are and nobody cares what your leanings are if you are really good at your job in these fields.

He gave a show in Tennessee this weekend and protested their ban on drag shows by performing in drag himself.

I gotta say too, if you ever get to see him, he has about a half dozen guitars on stage and will play every one of them at some point. He is a pretty solid player. I don't go to a lot of shows any more, but the only ones I remember being louder were Ted Nugent. I guess when you're an a-hole to everyone around you you end up with a lot of time to practice.

During COVID he was doing shows from his living room via Facebook weekly, and he was pretty regimented about it. His only request was to pay up via Venmo. He would put in a good two hours every show.

James certainly is surly. That being said I stuck around after one of his gigs and struck up a conversation with him at the bar while he had a Maker's Mark. Talked about hunting and fishing for about 30 minutes.

Pretty sure this has been posted here before.

Some of the old sci fi writers were libertarians and anti-authoritarian. I remember reading about Heinlein going on about how much Russia was lying about their GDP after he visited them back in the day.

Both McMurtrys are masters of their art. I couldn't care less if we don't align 100% politically. Or socially for that matter.

This. Our American culture needs to relearn what it means to appreciate people for their talent and simply ignore their politics. The outdoors board is the only 'media' I've ever participated in because it largely avoids politics (aside from 2nd amendment) and creates a largely positive environment.

I like some of James' songs, but I haven't read any of Larry's books. Not sure why.

You'll notice a big difference here. The OB doesn't throw politics in your face and make you eat it, like the rest of our country does half the time.

The valued cost are pretty much spot on. The Colts are all post 1899 which changes a lot of the value. Unless his name adds a lot of value at the auction.

Agree 100%.
The only comment I can make is that Larry McMurtry has wrote basically all western sagas...which are typically watched and enjoyed by conservative audiences that enjoy the old west, guns, the outdoors etc.........conservative folks...at least thats my take anyway. I did not know anything about him or his son until reading this thread....other than he wrote those books and i liked them.
With that being said it seems hypocritical that he hates conservative ideals but yet those conservatives are who made him all his money. Just sayin..

Says who?

You know, you can have conservative views and non-conservative views about different subjects and still be a fully functional human. Actually, truth be told, you'd be a better functioning human than the hyper-polarized. Just don't tell Forum 16....

I never felt duped. I always took his stories to be about people trying to make the best of situations they were in. That was why not all of his good stories were westerns. Last Picture Show and Horseman Pass By are two of my favorites, and while set in western locations are also in more modern times. One of my favorite aspects of his writings is that I feel like I know his characters personally. I can read Last Picture Show and draw a parallel between almost every person in that book and someone I knew in real life growing up.

The guy wrote stories that I was able to see in my head. Not that many writers do that for me.
