Headed to Port A for a few days. We will be staying at Gulf Waters RV Resort. Plan to do some surf fishing and also head over to Packery for the first time. Would appreciate any and tips for fishing PC with regard to rigs, baits, time of day, incoming/outgoing tide, etc.

Also, IIRC the best time for specks in the surf is generally from around sunrise til mid-morning. Is that correct and what rigs/baits are recommended?

When you go to Packery bring two Brooms and a chair

Set your chair down and then lay a broom to the left and right of your chair .. that way no one will be any closer than. One broom stick away.. casting room … and bring pliers for catfish …. Weekends can be rough at Packery

I've caught fish in the surf all times of day down there .. it's not that hot yet so just have to give them a try .. but generally morning and early evening seem to work

  • Get to Packery EARLY to beat the crowd
  • Fish 3/4 of the way down the N jetty
  • Live shrimp
  • Lemon rig - KEEP OFF THE BOTTOM!
  • Water looked like crap last weekend - hardhead city

I was gonna head to POC. Looks like same forecast as usual for most of my trips lately. Winds predicted at 15-25. Makes most things a lot more difficult. Your best bet may be the surf early Saturday. I would also consider Port Aransas jetties. For that area, there is a YouTube weekly fishing report that a guide gives with good location info. I will add a link below.

I've fished Packery a good bit. My advice first is to listen to B1-83 I regret not running in to him when I fished there. Have a target species but be open to that's biting. Work from the shoreline out as the day gets later and back to the shoreline as it gets dark. There's a gut that runs parallel to the north jetty right by the shore that's good for flounder. If you get green water at the end Spanish Mack's are fun. I did artificial for Smacks and flounder, live bait for everything else. Everything on the jetties are seasonal but might be some drum and sheepshead around as well. Good luck!

In a heat wave I have witnessed very large kingfish caught and even dorado from there The shark fishers are there using large shad. You are going to go through a ton of tackle if you dont cast out far enough

Ive had success wade fishing with piggie perch and artificials looking like em with trout 100 yards north but there are a bunch of sharks in there

If you wade fish that bridge inland where the choke point inland from there youre going to get to know your neighbors very well Youre occassional 8 foot bull shark will clear everyone out every once in a while

Yessir! There should be good sheepshead there for another 2-3 weeks. I hate that the old "trench" around the north has about filled in. It was a 15' cut from the end to 1/3 the way down on the surf side, and was NAILS all year round for different species. These days, the channel side has been the best for me. About 2 weeks before my surgery, I limited out on sheepies (17-19 inches) on the channel side 3/4 of the way down.

We are in Port A now, leaving Saturday morning. Hopefully won't be too crowded at Packery. Winds are strong, red flag warnings up surf is pretty brutal right now.

Sheep's are delicious when you remove the red meet and will take them any chance I get. I've caught more flounder out of that cut than I can count. Love this time of year at the jetties!

I've gotten to where I'll take them to Billings and gladly let the guy there fillet them for $2. He gets slabs of fillets off a sheepshead where I get one good chunk off each side.

When mom trusted me with a fillet knife (bad move mom) and I started cleaning my own fish, sheepshead kept going back in the water. Never did get good at getting enough meat off of them to warrant the size.

For my sheepshead people out there - I fished w capt sharky (outcast charters in Galveston) 2 years ago and he showed us how it's done super quick. There's actually a YouTube video of him doing it that's pretty cool. Just google capt sharky sheepshead filet - you'll see what I mean. Also- Sharky is the man! Freaking love sheepshead… caught and fried some up this weekend in fact!

I found that when I filet and get to the rib cage to pull a little to free it up with a little knife work. But I've always filleted around the ribs instead of cutting through them then cutting them out. But I will agree Sheep's are the worst.
