So just want to vent a little bit about Banfield Pet hospital just in case any of you city dwellers or suburbanites are considering Banfield Pet Hospital that used to be inside Pets Mart in some places. I consider them low grade vet services because they basically are a pet gas station and thats it... if your dog needs real help you may not get it at Banfield.

So both dogs were registered with Banfield for about 7 years, seemed to work fine with their annual shots, but didnt need them for much more. Anyway, one of the dogs is older and got hit (run over) by a bigger dog out at my moms and hurt his back, he was in alot of pain. Anyway, I take my dog into Banfield in Houston because he is in pain and the lady vet says they wont treat him. I tell her Banfield is my vet and he is in need of a vet, she tells me once again to take the dog somewhere else. So me, pretty pissed off at them at that point told them to take them off their monthly plans, they guy at the desk said their plans wont renew. in the meantime I take my dog to the local vet my mom uses and they give him a couple pills to take for 2-3 weeks, the dog takes them and is fine, no x-rays, no CT scan, just good old vet knowledge of the dog, gives a prescription and the dog is 100% about 8 months later, he was good after 2 weeks actually.

So Banfield calls today and said your dog is ready for shots. I tell the guy do you remember me? yall refused to treat my dog (even though Im on their wellness plan), He says yes I remember. I proceed to ask him why are they calling when the plans were supposed to be shut down. He says the plans can only be shut down if you call into their cancelation phone number.

Anyway, long story short, they are a terrible terrible service when your animal really needs their attention, they are fine when you only need annual shots. I will never use them again, just my 2 cents and rant about Banfield and their low end vet service . My business partner and his wife have also since then stopped taking their jack russel to banfield.. hes also and older dog and needs a real vet so Banfield isnt the answer

I agree that Banfield has a lot of horror stories out there.

I'm curious as to the reason they gave for not treating your dog.

Many years ago, one of my dogs swallowed a couple of rocks. We took him to a Banfield since we were out of town at the time and I had no idea about them. They estimated surgery costs of over $5K. On a tip from the vet tech, my wife called a local Aggie vet that would do it for less than a 1/3. He's joyfully rolling in mud in the backyard right now.

I'm not judging, but a little weird for the Aggie vet to be rolling in mud in your backyard. I guess if he arranges his surgery schedule to allow for it, there's no harm.

Damn, my son just swallowed a bunch of rocks a few days ago and I paid the vet $6K for surgery. I should have shopped around

They are pretty bad. We are spoiled bc husband was a vet tech for a decade and family friend is an old school vet who husband also worked for. We used them one time bc our neighbor was a vet tech and we needed to go in on a Sunday. They did imaging that they couldn't read but husband could. And they just gave us more iv fluid which we already had started we just needed more. Biggest thing we needd d to know was about blockage

The stupid vet on duty that day said it was an "emergency situation" … the dog was injured 5 days prior, there was no emergency.. 2 days later my moms local vet looked at him and gave him muscle relaxers and pain pills .. bandfield is junk

Back in a different life I worked for Banfield. I managed several of their hospitals for a number of years. I take my dog to the local vets down the street.

Not a Banfield story but another shocking vet story. Our vet we used for years sadly passed away after an illness. We went to a new vet with our Brittany "Lucy" and used this vet for a few years. One morning before sunup I let Lucy out for her early morning 3Ps (poop/pee/patrol). She came busting back in limping and bleeding profusely from one of her front legs. We did not have anything appropriate so I had to bandage her leg with panty liners. I took the day off work and was at the vets office when they opened. I'm standing at the counter explaining what happened to the dog. The poor dog is in my arms wearing blood soaked panty liners on her front leg. They tell us that there "just doesn't seem to be an opening today". I was flabbergasted. I called a friend who recommended a new vet across town who took Lucy right in and stitched her up. They became our new vet until Lucy passed in her sleep last September. Never did find what she cut herself on.
