Since we're talking Red Dirt music, and weird Bud Light offerings, I'll throw out that we enjoy several great "Texas dancehall" bands, one being Jake Hooker and the Outsiders. Twin fiddles, fantastic steel guitar, and Jake on his upright bass.
Jake cut a gospel CD a few years ago, and covered this classic Marty Robbins tune:

Jake Hooker is great. I'd add Billy Mata to the list along with Jody Nix as well as the Rocky King Band. Darrell McCall is still going too.

Jody Nix plays music along the same lines. Folks from west Texas have most likely danced to some tunes played by Jody or his dad Hoyle at their dancehall called The Stampede outside Big Spring.

Eleven Hundred Springs broke up but they at another band that played good, old school Honky Tonk music.

Ellis Hubbard plays this kinda music and is a newer act.

Saw them live at the London Hall one summer when I was in college and have been hooked ever since. They are some goober lookin MFs but man they played some good old school sounding country music! Would love to see them again if they ever decide to pick it back up.

Saw them at Gruene Hall and I'm pretty sure Lonestar Round Up at some point in Austin. It's a massive rockabilly type car show. Always good music.

Hayes Carll could definitely fit on this thread for some of his older stuff.

And then Slaid Cleaves for something like Texas Love Song

You wouldn't think a boy raised in Maine would know his ass from a hole in the ground when it comes to Honky Tonk, but that dude can play some good music. Horseshoe Lounge is my favorite song of his. Discovered him from a free CD someone gave my dad called "Brewed in Texas". That whole CD is loaded up with absolute bangers. Wish I still had it. Going to look on Apple Music for it now.

Shameless plug. This is an acquaintance but his music is the style I loved while in college as well as now. Give him a listen and download if you desire.

I feel old. I remember when texascd.com sent that disc out as a "free bonus" back in 2002 or so.

LOVE Houston Marchman, crazy how many people that I talk to that have never heard of him.

Viet-Nashville, is the truth. Especially about "country" being written for, "an 8th grade level divorced house wife"......

Chis Wall is someone I think of when I think of Texas Dance Hall. He was of the best song writes I've ever heard. He passed away in June 2021. This is one of my favorite songs of his. He helped out Reckless Kelly a lot when they first moved to Austin.

We have enjoyed hearing "The Broken Spokes", a Houston-based band doing traditional music, both covers and original songs.

If you have Spotify, check out Mike Ethan Messick. Incredible song writer & an Aggie if I'm not mistaken.

His presence on Youtube is kind of limited & doesn't include much off of this album.

Also This song off of his 2008 album is one of my favorites.

So lets see how this goes… I wonder why George Strait is really never viewed as "Texas Music". I get that he was Nashville and by the time Red Dirt/Texas music was popular George Strait was an established star

I was a weekend DJ at a country station in BCS for about a year and a half. They had a consultant that came in, mind you they were paying this guy, that didn't get the difference between Texas Country and Nashville County.

He clicked off 3-4 artists that were FROM Texas, but not Texas Country. I kept telling them that the college kids were into Red Dirt/Texas Country a whole lot more than they were the Nashville stuff but they didn't listen. What did I know, I'd only lived there 20yrs at that point.....this guy was from out of town, so he was an expert......

Now there is a station in BCS that plays nothing but Texas & Red Dirt on top of the 20gazillion "country" stations that were already there.

GS if from TX and is the King, no doubt. But he was pre-Red Dirt/Texas County Music revolution.

For those of you that like podcasts or to nerd out on country music history, check out Cocaine & Rhinestones. It's hosted by Tyler Mahan Coe, David Allan Coe's son. Interesting stuff.
