What do y'all think?

I call them all bluegill…

My daughter caught this today and the scale bounced between 15oz and 1.1 lbs

What a toad of a panfish. Way to go dad and daughter that's how you do it!

Just checked my fish ID book. I'm going to go w redear sunfish, although the light isn't quit right to see the thin red rim if it's there on the opercle flap. Second guess is a bluegill, but doesn't have the bars / patterning or blue on the gill. But opercle and pointer fins more like a bluegill.

Not a greenie, longear, or red breast.

Edited to add - fish ID book says perch is inaccurate for some reason. Panfish, sunfish, bluegill, bream/brim are ok. Not sure why perch is a no go. We called them perch and bream growing up.

Perch is a totally different family.

Is that the little lake in the back of Castlegate? If so I didn't know there was much in there. Very cool!

It is.

Lots of good fish in there. I caught a 7# largemouth last April.

Rumor is, local landowners cull ponds and fill
them up with good fish.

If someone has been stocking the pond it could be a coppernose or possibly a bluegill hybrid.
NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

Open to public or only Castlegate residents? And if residents only…..anyone checking ID's? Asking for a friend (and his kids).

Red ear sunfish have a distinctive red mark on their operculum.

Bluegill or bluegill hybrid.

I think that might be just a huge longear sunfish.

CG1 is public. CG2 is residents only.
Nobody checks IDs at either.

Just pick up your trash or any trash you find and release the fish

Great catfish trot line bait cause they are more hardy than other "perch"

Perch. Bass. Catfish.

There was just never a need for further graduations. Lol.

My folks gave me a Fly fishing central Texas (Austin) book and it's got a pretty good chapter on how to ID sunfish, bass, carp, gar, cichlids, some cats, drum, pretty much most of what you run into in central Texas rivers. Nothing too technical, just general overview and features.

I've been wondering what kind of perch people are catching in central Texas. I call them all bluegill, like most soft drinks are coke

I'm going with this. The OP's fish does not look like any of the native Texas sunfish. It most closely resembles a bluegill.

Definitely not a redear, redbreast, long ear or green.

Perch, specifically yellow perch, aren't native to Texas. Not sure if they are even found here, maybe in Lake Meredith.

Oh and at some point in time, it's likely that the redbreast and long ear were somehow crossed up regarding identifying purposes. The long ear actually has a red breast and the redbreast has a longer ear.

First WFS fisheries class lab I had was Dr. Arnold. He had some fish laying in pans and told us to identify them.
I answered, perch, minnow, catfish, crappie and bass. He scolded me.
Still call them perch. And a white bass ain't a " sand bass".

If your Gramps ever came up north and got in my boat where we'd catch sunfish, bluegills and actual perch, it would make for a hilarious who's-on-first? situation.

I bet 50% of the pictures I have been sent by customers over the years asking for an ID have been Warmouth.

Well, it looks like out of the thousands of "perch" I've caught in my life - I actually might have never caught one, lol.

But apparently I've caught a ton of blue gill and sunfish.

I learn something every day
