Where is the best place to buy cotton seed for deer near the Brazos Valley?

Seems like Producers does not carry it.

TSC has it by the bag but you should be able to buy it cheaper from a gin

Thanks for the tip on the cotton gin. Found New Dawn Gin off 21 and they sell by the 40lb bag or big 800lb bag.

Now when do I stop feeding to keep bucks from going sterile?

Need to hit cotton gins in your area during or right after ginning season. Buy bulk to last you til the following ginning season. No reason to buy Fortified Cotton Seed at Tractor Supply for outrageous prices by the bag.

They should sell it by the ton at most gins.

I don't think bucks will go sterile if cotton seed is just used as a supplement and they are able to still forage on native range.

Wrong time of year to be asking the gin. Most have been shut down for the last couple of months and they tend to sale and ship seed out pretty quickly during the ginning season to avoid stockpiles

E5 out of El Campo bags cottonseed for their deer feeders but their website doesnt show their dealer network unfortunately, http://5eranchproducts.com/

Cottonseed, in some instances can cause Gossypol toxicity. Gossypol is a chemical in the seeds. It can cause bucks to go sterile, but typically only if poor range conditions exist or the population density is way to high for the existing range.
If you have good range conditions with plenty of browse and forbes, etc. you should not have an issue.
If you are worried about it feed cottonseed from post rut until the bucks start shedding their velvet.
Don't feed it and stop and feed it and stop many times throughout the year..... as constantly changing feed can upset the PH balance in the gut ( ruminant) and cause poor digestion and absorption of needed nutrients.

Sounds like a mess. Fuzzy seed won't flow like corn will

No. You'll have an instant mess to clean out. The leftover fibers on the seed help it cling together in wire baskets and keeps it from draining out.

Let's see those home made cotton seed feeders! I recall a thread on a related topic last year. Gonna do it this time around.

Just make a 2 ft circle of net wire or a cattle panel and wire it to a t post. Fill with cottonseed and they will go to town on it.

Buy you a roll of Red Brand V-mesh wire.

Cut your lengths 73". Make a hoop and wire it up. Drop it over a t-post and fill it up. Some folks wire it to the t-post…we don't.

FYI - Brazos Valley might get too much rain for it to sit directly on the ground without molding. I'm just outside of Fairfield and we had that issue a few years back.

Also - you might want to try the individual cottonseed bags to make sure the deer on your property actually take to it before buying in bulk. In my experience, it's not an immediate switch.

Picked up 6 bags today from new dawn gin off hwy 21 west. They said mix with corn to get deer used to it!

I'll up date y'all here on how it goes.

Caleb out there was super nice and talked me through what to expect with it. He said they will probably still have some 40lb bags until about June/July. But the cotton crop was way down.
