I read on story that native Americans ate them and that helped keep them from moving north. Easy to catch once they got to the plains and could never move north. Not sure if that's true or not.

I remember in one of my WFS classes at our school the prof talked about them moving north due to more and more irrigation and agriculture development which increased their preferred grubs and insects which allowed them to migrate north.
Our yard at our ranch by Harper had a bunch of dead spots due to infestation of grub worms. The armadillos showed up and dug up parts of the yard but then the grass grew back and no more grubs.

The argument that armadillos are invasive in Texas is a weak one.

They aren't considered invasive actually something like regionally expanding or something like that.

All sources I have found day it came to Texas around 1850.

Armadillos came to Texas for the Lone Star. I thought everyone knew that

Look at post 15 on this thread. I'll say it again, the invasive argument is weak.

Whitewings say hi.

Well they aren't actually invasive - but they didn't move into Texas until 1850 so I'm not too concerned with them

I caught one after school when I was a senior in high school (84-85). Took it home and me and three friends painted it solid red and put a blue racing stripe down its back and double zeros on both sides of it. We turned it loose in the freshman hall after lunch. It was truly hilarious. Also went down as the worst ass whipping I ever got in school, and believe me, I had more than my share.

I graduated hs in 2004. I got my ass whipped by coaches. Either that or bear crawls and tire flips.

Oh did they !!! We called it getting "licks". As a matter of fact, about 15 of us got "licks" after school was over our senior year. School was over, but we hadn't had our graduation ceremony and received our diplomas. We went on our senior trip on two chartered buses. On the way home, we talked our bus driver into pulling up beside the other bus, turning on the light inside the bus and honking at the other bus while we mooned them. So, we got the choice of getting 3 "licks" and getting to walk at graduation, or no "licks" and not walking at graduation. We all took the "licks".

Interesting. I'm a few years older than you. Never had any of our schools do paddling, just missed it by 5 years or so I think. But conditioning for athletes was the main punishment.
