Curious to know if any of you guys enjoy bikepacking. Have done a few trips last couple of years and it has always been a great time. Doing this one this weekend.

Would love to do it. That looks like a great route. Prolly have to do it solo, my ride partner has been having back issues.

Sounds like fun. Just can't read that link past the land acknowledgment.

I dream about riding the blue ridge parkway and Route 66.

Mainly inspired by VeganCyclist and Jeremiah Bishop's "The Impossible Route" YouTube series.

That looks like a cool route, but 66 miles? That's a one day ride, even if you are spinning easy.

Agreed. Have done some longer ones but for me this is more about getting outside and being out in nature than anything else.

There's a new route being formed from Oklahoma border down and over to big bend. That's a good bucket list item.

Dang, Big Ben. I'm impressed that you even remembered that.

I have taken many bicycle tours in the US over the past 40 years. The duration of the various rides has ranged from 2 days to two months. Over 95% of my riding was done on asphalt roads with tent camping each night. In general, I think that "bikepacking" involves much more off-road riding, with some asphalt roadways included. But I'm not exactly sure where the line is drawn.

The Oregon Coast is a beautiful route if you don't mind a bit of automobile traffic alongside you while you ride. I've done it twice. Riding north to south along the coast for nominally 350 miles from Astoria to Brookings, you are able to remain on the side of the road closest to the Pacific Ocean to improve your daily views. IIRC, for all but one stretch near Brookings, there was a State Park roughly every 40 miles or less. Camping fees when I went a few years ago were just $4.00/night per cyclist. Mid-summer temperatures were crazy-comfortable for a old guy used to the Texas heat.

There's a pretty nice route crossing the borders of Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia (Canada). It is called the Selkirk Loop. Nominally 300 miles over asphalt roads, campsites are available every 25-50 miles along the way. The ride includes riverside roads, lake camping, and a 5-6 mile ferry ride across Kootenay Lake.

If gravel is more your thing, there is a Rails-to-Trails route connecting Kansas City and St. Louis, Missouri. It is the seamless combination of The Katy Trail and the Rock Island Trail. Nominally 300 miles of cycling on a relatively firm crushed rock trail, this ride is relatively flat -- it's an old railroad route. There are small town stops along the way and tent camping available every night. My daughter and I made a real baseball themed trip one year -- dubbed The Doubleplay Tour -- taking in the Cardinals season opener in St. Louis and the Royals home opener in Kansas City. We even slept at a little league baseball field one night!

Ragoo talked about the Blue Ridge Parkway. Camping spots are far between on that road. But a fair substitute is the Natchez Trace. Connecting Natchez, Mississippi, to Nashville, Tennessee, this well maintained road has fairly low automobile traffic. I've ridden only the section from Jackson to Nashville. But I was impressed with the pleasantness of the route and the friendliness of the people. Campsites include State Parks, city parks, and even a spot in the back yard of a fire station.

C&O Canal Trail (186 miles) and the GAP Trail (150 miles). If you're not from the area, travel to DC then take Amtrak up to Pittsburgh to start the GAP.

Easy riding, but this is a good trail to take your time and poke around the little towns and all the ruins and Civil War era stuff along the way. Some people bed and breakfast their way, but there's primitive camping every 5-10 miles the entire way with the exception of the last stretch into DC.

This was a really great trip.

We parked our cars here https://www.hipcamp.com/en-US/land/texas-camp-brown-chicken-brown-cow-ranch-y0zh7mov?adults=1&children=0 on Friday and got on our bikes around 3 pm. We made it to the Castell General Store around 6:30 and had some food and cold beers and met a bunch of great local folks. Friday night we camped here on the Llano river https://www.facebook.com/Leifestecampground/. Bobette who owns the place was kind enough to bring us some coffee and breakfast tacos in the morning. We got back on our bikes around 11 am on Saturday and stopped by the Castell General store for a bit then headed to Llano and ate at Cooper's BBQ then had a few beers at Joe's Bar. We got back to BCBC and camped out there Saturday night. The weather was nice so we skipped the tents and camped out under the stars. Had a lot of fun and met some great folks. Look forward to doing this one again sometime.

Glad you made it to Castell! All of my "home" routes are around there. I often try to make any long gravel ride travel through for a burger. Some great gravel in the general area.

They do an annual race that is worth checking out if your bike packing overlaps with general gravel rides.

We loved Castell and the General Store . Randy's son Mark was running the place while we were there and he couldn't have been more friendly and welcoming. It's a great little spot and burgers were delicious.

I see you are running Cinturatos on more of a MTB style bike, I am assuming 650Bx45-50. I was looking at this trip with my Handsome/ Twin Six Speedy Devil with 700 x 32 Panaracer Pasellas. Do you think this would be adequate or do you think I need some knobs. I have a pair of 32mm Kenda Quicks or 35mm Conti Cyclocross race tires I could slip on if needed. Or I could go a completely different route and use one of my old 26in MTBs with a pair of Maxxis 2.15" DHTs.

Yes, you are correct about the tires/size. Regarding the bike, I'm just using what I have and it's not ideal for bikepacking. I only get out to do this once or twice a year and so far haven't felt like springing for a proper rig (I'm tempted though). I don't think knobs are essential for this route just need to watch out for flats with all the sticker burrs and cacti.
