Has anyone ever planted these? I am looking for something with a more compact vine and thought I'd give them a shot.

They do well enough. Soil really matters. Our soil is more shaley - so, anywhere I plant watermelons, I get a bag of sand and mix with the soil 50/50. Seems to have helped a lot.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

I have had pretty good luck with sugar babies over the years. That said, I don't really care for the flavor.

I switched to a variety called Sweet Beauty. The habitat isn't quite as compact as sugar babies but they produce 5-7lb little melons. Perfect size for me and kids to eat in one sitting.

They'll have transplants on/under plastic in the Magic Valley in a couple of weeks.

Have planted Sugar Baby watermelons several different years, the first time you plant them, you will have enough seeds for decades!
Also found the yellow meat version, both are easy to grow, delicious, but the seed content is ......incredible.

Always planted the Sultan and Summer Sweet varieties. I find them the best tasting.

I don't grow them any longer. Too many seeds for the content.

But, you can skip the eating part and just juice them all and use it for watermelon margaritas. That's what I think they are good for.

If you like a sweet watermellon look into the Bradford. Highest brix of any variety. Pretty rare and an interesting history.
So three conspiracy theorists walk into a bar.................You can't convince me that's a coincidence.

Sweet crimsons are a little bit bigger than a sugar baby.

And i've had better luck with them overall.

I didn't have much luck with them last year. Flavor of the ones that ripened was not worth the space I gave them. Only year I've planted them so I don't have much experience with them.

I have planted Bradford two years in a row and it will be the only melon I plant for the foreseeable future. Very productive and great flavor. But it has a sprawling habit with very long vines, so it doesn't fit the bill you are looking for.
