Does anybody here have any experience with Protection Dog Plus or a similar company?

PDP dogs offer the best of both worlds; highly trained family companions who are ready for every day life with you, but have the training needed to protect should the situation arise.

Everybody is telling me to get a dog for home defense, and this looks like the best option. All of their reviews look very positive.

I think the get a dog comment is more for additional alerting, and the barking is often a deterrent. Didn't realize you could buy a dog with a very particular set of skills, skills acquired over a very long career. Thought I misread a comma at first.

I don't want to brag (I want to be humble), but through hard work over many decades my family is very well off, and that price is not something that is really an issue for us.

No, that's definitely bragging.

Those prices are ridiculous. Just buy a puppy and get it trained. Even high level training would be at most a 1/3 of that plus you connect with it when it's a puppy…

I bought a purebred lab from incredible lines for $1,000. I sent her to Rody Best for gundog training so I could hunt with her. As he always does, Rody trained her up and got all of her foundation and obedience on point. There isn't so much as someone walking down the street and she's up at the window barking and growling. She's the best alarm system I could ever have. I don't know how they sense it but the person could be walking silently by the house with not a peep and she knows they are there. Those of you with a dog know what I'm saying. If someone even jiggled a door handle she'd go ape***** Ain't no one gonna sneak in. LOL And with her loud barking and low growl I can guarantee they'll move along and find another house.

I type all this to say it's not necessary to do what you're thinking of doing. That kind of money is absurd. Get ya a dog you can hunt with, send them to a reputable dog trainer, have a buddy and hunting companion and as a bonus you'll have a great security system.

If you have that kind of money, and are stupid enough to spend that kind of money on a dog, trained Ocelots are clearly the way to go.

You guys apparently have no idea of the cost our state or fed gov pays for drug dogs do you?

My dad knows a couple of law enforcement agencies that have purchased some dogs from them. They spend lots of time sifting through puppies to find the dogs that have the intelligence and behaviour traits to make such a dog. They spend tons of man hours on each dog to insure that you will get a dog that will be a safe family dog but also a high end protection dog. Lots of time spent de - synthetising the dogs to all kinds of situations and actions and then adding the total obediance side to it.
I also have been told they have another partner company that also trains horses for mounted police work....that require similar training as the dogs, albeit costing a lot more dollars.
What you are really paying for is the liability aspect of the protection dog......one lawsuit from a "trained" dog mistepping by biting a child or friend will make the price of these dogs a bargain.

If you have a true need for a family protection dog.....a dog to watch over your wife or children while you are gone.....and you are a high profile, wealthy person with valuable "assets" that need "protecting", then these guys can fill that need for you with some fantastically trained dogs for sure.

If you just need a dog to bark when a stranger or somebody is messing in your yard or around your house and alert you.... then you can get by one heck of a lot cheaper by just getting you a good lab or some other dog....and doing basic training with him/her.

Ok...no worries. I wasn't trolling.

Good for you guys.

This is a good option for you then.

I'd also look at different armor options for family vehicles.

So, I'd be very honest with yourself and them, about how much time you can spend working them.

English Mastiffs are great dogs, instinctively - and there may be someone training them - and are really good family dogs, if you have acreage.

Something which does a great job being used in patrols all day, is not necessarily the same animal as one which does a good job hanging around the house, playing with the kids.

German Shepherds, Labs, Goldens, and others are great dogs instinctively as well.
Think that is why the OP is looking at those ultra expensive dogs because they will excell in what he feels he wants and needs..... and he is willing to pay for that want.
If the man can afford it and it's what he wants.... so be it.
Maybe he thinks somebody spending 140K on a flats boat is stupid.... or 250K on a horse.
We are all different and place values on things differently individually.
He asked in his post if anybody new about that company or one like it.
Maybe he is bragging... who knows.... but if he has the money.....,

I've actually spent quite a bit of time researching this exact topic because I was also looking for a balance between a family-safe dog and real protection. Protection Dog Plus definitely looks impressive on paper, and I've seen some of their dogs in action through demos very obedient, calm around kids, but with serious training when it counts.

That said, they're not the only option out there. There are a few reputable companies offering similar services, often with a more personalized approach depending on your lifestyle and needs. For anyone seriously considering getting a trained protection dog, I'd suggest doing a bit of comparison first. One place I found helpful for understanding the different training levels and what to expect is this resource click here.

Also, yeah, as someone pointed out, the prices can be a shock at first. But when you consider the years of specialized training and the peace of mind it provides, it can be worth it if security is a top priority for your household.

Hope that helps someone else who's in the same boat I was a few months ago!

The prices are crazy to me, but there is a big difference between a fully and specially trained protection dog and Ol' Sparky who has had obedience training and was purchased as an extra alarm that the family eventually will ignore because he barks at the mailman and every single guest that comes to the door the same way as an intruder. A true protection dog will be able to tell the difference between a guest/mailman/salesman versus a threat. That is what gets paid for and if wealthy enough to afford it, then absolutely wealthy enough to have an increased risk of targeted bad behavior and might need that next level of training and protection above and beyond Ol' Sparky.
