Deer blind materials

I built a blind last summer that turned out great. I used metal studs and LP smart side siding.

However, the blind was not only pretty pricey to build, it is super heavy. To the point it makes moving it almost not an option.

I want to build/buy another one that will be on a 5' platform. Anyone use any materials successfully that made the blind lighter and easier to handle?

I also saw online a brand called Lazy Man. They are two piece fiberglass blinds that are pretty affordable but I'm sure it's a get what you pay for type thing.

Make it so it can be easily disassembled into 4 walls, top, base, and stand?

Are you wanting to be able to move it in the future? Or are you trying to keep it light - weight to get on the 5' platform?

Maybe a little of both.

Building the walls, roof, base separately and putting them all together on-site is the only way to go for easy setup/take down. On another note, if you go with fiberglass make sure you paint it every couple of years to keep the fibers from breaking down due to the UV exposure

Agree with this…I built a double blind once and framed it out like a house. Super solid, but super heavy. It's a ground blind and will never move.

I have put mine on skids. I don't make them high, and can use a winch to put them on the trailer. I use the mule to pull them off and pull them to the location.

This is the way.

Also, if you have a tractor with either pallet forks or hay forks, moving a blind is pretty easy.

Be careful with the tractor method. Have heard of tragic accidents happening where people were moving deer stands using this method.

I was going to leave the bed out but might be useful when I go night hunting

Total waste of space that would rarely be used night hunting! Now if your lady friend hunts with you……

This is how we (my carpenter grandfather) built them for years(no bed), 4'x4'.

2x2 framing, painted masonite siding. Construct each wall as a separate unit. Leave the siding on two sides where it overlaps the studs on the corner of the other two sides.

Put it together on top of the tower after tower was set and guy-wired.

He worked with a sheet metal man to make a one-piece roof that hung over the sides 3-4" and put screws through it into the top "header" from the side.

Light enough for one man to lift up on a rope one side at a time and screw or nail together. If you're careful when moving, we often moved them with box on the 20' tower.

Lasted at least 10 years, sometimes longer when tornadoes didn't take them out.

built a blind with a good DIY friend in pieces. Took 2X4 and split them , used the the thinnest plywood out there and built the four wall with 1" overlap on two of the sides and on the bottom Put down ply wood on 4x4 pallet and used 2pieces of the 1" split 2x4 to attach old tin roofing.

Added the legs in th filed and screwed the sections and roof together. Light and portable on trailer. Pretty clever and most of the wood was reused from a scrap pile so it cost next to nothing

Texas Hunter out of San Antonio has really light weight blinds. they have lasted for us for 15 years so far.

FYI, I might have a solution for you. I have a 4'x 6' Dillon fiberglass blind mounted on a small trailer that was made for it. It has 3 folding levelers that crank up to stabilize it and a mounted spare tire. 1 7/8" hitch. You can pull it with a 4 Wheeler. We've been in the Panhandle and lost our lease. So selling everything.

A friend of mine has this blind and it sucks. Very light weight, makes a lot of noises with movement and windows seem to be too high.

Also the tower frame crosses over the ladder and makes it difficult to climb down

It's like anything else - pay attention, secure the load right, don't be dumb and you'll be just fine.

I have had a different experience. We put carpet down on floor and below windows. It's no louder than any other blind with carpet added.

It is hard to get into, but its light weight and easy to move. We put it in a river bottom and it has flooded a few times. No damage to the blind at all. It has stood up a lot better than our other wood and fiberglass blinds.

Window height is perfect for me.

To each their own. It's not perfect, but it checks all the boxes.

That is something to consider with weight - lightweight is good for moving, but pretty much bad for anything else because of the lightweight nature of it. Most have poor support structure, so they creak a lot, wind can blow them over a lot easier if you don't put a lot of effort into securing it to the ground properly, cows can knock them over easier, etc.

Double edged sword, for sure, and finding a good balance between the two depends a lot on what you have available equipment wise to move things with.

I like the window shelves on that blind. May steal that design.

Not a fan of how narrow it is, but that's a personal thing. My blind is 6x6, enough room for me to be able to stretch out comfortably. Few things make a hunt more miserable than when arthritis kicks in and you are in a cramped ass blind and can't stretch out some for me.

6x6 sounds awesome. I have been wanting to build a hexagon that size for a bow blind.

Didn't mean to select that emogi. Haha

If I buy again, I'm going with a tank blind every time. This is my first year in it and it is so comfortable especially with the young kids.

This one is on a 4ft skid which is each to winch onto a trailer

Just carpet

It is actually really nice on the hot days. With all the windows, I get a good draft
