Alright guys and gals I need some help. We've got a lease out in Bastrop and the cows are relentless getting into our feeding pens. We've fenced them in, with barbwire on top and they still keep getting in. We initially had hog fence panels and they didn't care so I upgraded a couple to the iron framed hog panels with barb wire along the top and still are getting in. Any ideas?

You're going to have to over-fence it for a while now that they have found it.

Once they learn to push you are going to have to put up a hot wire with solar charger. Put it chest high and use insulator just off of panel- deer will learn to go over......eventually. Make due until season is over if you are worried about it. Tie some ribbons on it and cows will learn to associate it with getting lit up.

Corral panels with t posts on the corners and in the center. Wire the posts to the panels.

Yes, the corral panels aren't cheap. Yes, it's overkill. But as you know OP, there's nothing worse than putting in the effort to have a lease, and loose hunts to cattle.

Panels. Posts. Wire. That'll do it.

Set up cams and see how, they are breaking in, fix the entry point

Oh, forgot to add.

If you're filling feeders off a truck bed backed up to feeder, then select the 1 panel where you want to drive up to feeder, and make that the 1 and only 1 where you don't have a t-post in the center. Then you can untie the wire at one of the corners, and swivel the corral panel out to give you access to the feeder.

This. Electricity is the best answer here. They've gotten a taste for it and probably won't relent until they get popped.

They are jumping it.

Been thinking of going this route but didn't want to scare off the deer. Think we are going to try this.

Amen. Can't tell you how annoying it was to see them on the cameras as early as last night after we left.

I've even dropped mineral rocks for them out in the fields to try and keep them away. Was about to drop hay.

Yeah I get it.

I'd go panels. There is never not a market for them. If you lose the lease or something, you can always sell em.

Yea we did the heavy duty panels on two. Guess I'll try the hot wire.

Water cows are the worst!

We actually have these but added barbwire along the top. I figured the others were too tall.

Got it. Can't tell height from photos, but if 36"....they can jump that. Especially once they know there is candy on the other side. They can def push past those at the corners if they aren't tied to T posts.

Basically, cows suck.

I like the elec fence ideas, but if you're an absentee owner/leasee, then elec is one of those things that can go down, get messed up, etc.

A taller, stouter panel is my go to. Cows aren't going over a 60" panel.

We've moved to putting a 3 strand (top three) barbed wire fence on the outside with a lower hog panel fence around the feeder - deer can quickly get under and over. Barbed wire blocks the cows and panels block the pigs. It sucks….but I want the young deer to have access to protein and tall panels don't allow that.

Solar panel and hot wire is the way to go. We put them up and as you can see the wire in the background. Deer were in the pen the same night.

Go higher and leave space at the bottom. A deer would much rather go under something than over. Cows not so much.

If you're going with an electric fence, don't mess with driving a grounding rod into the earth. Just tie your ground back into one of the wires. When they hit both, they'll make the connection, and they learn quickly.
