Been on a few guided fishing trips lately and tipped the guide 20% if the cost of the trip and it seemed the guides weren't that happy with the tip. I've always thought 20% Is a good guide tip. Have standard tip amounts gone up? I don't want to be a cheap ass but when day trips are already $850 a day, tacking on more than 20% for a tip stings.

Twenty percent seems more than reasonable, but it would depend on what services are provided, and did the guides go above and beyond what was quoted. I could see going 20% if they extended the trip a bit to fill the cooler or made some kind of last-minute accommodation.

Is the guide the owner or is he contracted out?

My question too. If he's an owner why am I tipping him? I don't tip the restaurant owner, just his waitstaff.

20 is more than enough. Actually 20 is like good service 10-15 if they just show up drive the boat and do the little things along the way.

Guide was the owner both times and tipped on top of the cost of the trip. The guide did work hard, but did t go above and beyond IMO.

How did you tip? If you're at a bigger place and tilling with CC it may be more of a PITA and get hit for taxes. Could just be a function of how you're tipping.

20% is solid though and shouldn't piss off anyone in the service industry unless they had to sacrifice another trip or money for doing something for you.

I've paid via Venmo. And come to think of it, both of the guides that have been gruffy are older guys. Younger guides are always appreciative. Maybe the old timers miss the days of cash in their pocket.

$850 …. +20%. Not happening, no way, no how. Guides have been increasing costs without increasing results or the experience. When gas spiked we added $50-$75 per boat per day, otherwise its $100 - $125 max. Call me cheap … but the guides we use in Baffin and Mansfield always take my calls.

If the guide is also the owner, why doesn't he set the base rate at what he wants to get paid? Why take the chance that you get stiffed with a bad tip?

20% is a very good tip. Use cash instead as suggested above.

I'm about to cross this path on guide trips over the holidays. $850 already and expected to tip on top…..I can't get my head wrapped around that.

40-50 per man is a solid tip on a day fishing trip
