Hey y'all!

I'm looking to buy a pellet smoker. I know many hate on them but I'm looking for something a little easier than the offset.

What have y'all used and what would you recommend? Can you turn any on for quick grilling or are they only used for smoking?

Thanks!

There are a lot of lengthy threads on this topic that should be very helpful. Most of them are recent. Do a google advanced search of Texags.com and you be overwhelmed.

It really comes down to Grilla Grills or Rec-Teq to summarize. Unless youre budget is well over $1000.

Then it comes down to Pitts and Spitts or Yoder.

Two 14# turkeys going on the Yoder in the am. Never had a bad cook on this smoker. Going on three years now….

And yes, you can crank it up for a quick grill. Get the grill grates for even hotter temps.

I bought a Traeger 3 years ago and love it. One of best purchases ever made, I use at least weekly.

I've got the Pit Boss 5-Series and really like it. No issues whatsoever.

Happy to help you with a Yoder if you decide to go with the best built, made in the USA

Temp range from 150-600+ with Wi-Fi FireBoard connectivity built in.

We are the largest dealer in Houston and have them in stock. Even have them on sale this Friday for Black Friday special.

LOTS of info if you search the board, as suggested.

Distilling it down-
Entry Level (will get your foot in the door and actually last a few years of hard use): PitBoss, ZGrills, Camp Chef
Mid Tier (best of both worlds): Grilla or RecTeq
High End (worth it if you can reach): Yoder, Pitts & Spitts

I hate when someone comes on here and asks for specific advice and then a bunch of folks give recommendations completely not fitting the request.

However, I'm gonna slightly go outside the box you drew.

Pellet smokers are what they are, and some are obviously better than others. (I've only encountered Traegers at my friends' houses.)

I went slightly different, with a product that accomplishes about the same goal but with a benefit.

I bought a gravity fed (lump) charcoal smoker.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Char-Griller-Char-Griller-980-Gravity-Fed-Charcoal-Grill-37-76-in-Black-Barrel-Charcoal-Grill/5001374831

It's temperature controlled by a fan and is wi-fi and bluetooth compatible. BUT, it uses lump charcoal (and real wood chunks) rather than pellets.

The best pellet smoker still burns pellets, which is a limitation. Pellets don't give great smoke or smoke ring. At least that's the knock on them. That's why I went the way I did. Very happy with it so far!

Not to totally highjack this thread, but what is the deal with the Pitts & Spits that makes them so good. I have a couple RecTeqs, love them, have cooked on 1Yoder, and it was very nice no doubt. But what makes the P & S better than any other on the market with a PID and WiFi. It's almost like the name is better than the product. Do that have anything that is innovative that other brands are not doing, or trying to do? Thanks, and again sorry if derailed.

Z GRILLS 8 in 1 Wood Pellet Grill & Smoker, Auto Temperature Control, 572 Sq In Cooking Area, Direct Flame Access, 600D3E https://a.co/d/45UUmIT

I'm casually kicking tires on this right now. It's not the biggest and baddest. It doesn't have a ton of bells and whistles. However, it fits my needs (both in size and features) and it's on sale for $300. It's certainly a little nicer than what I'm currently using.

This is a very good point and if you are moving from a stick burner to a pellet grill, you will notice a difference. With that said, there are several ways you can modify your pellet burner to combust real wood chunks and get much more comparable results to a traditional smoker, with the convenience of the automation and temp control.

Also not to be understated is the quality of pellets used can have a significant effect on the flavor.

I am not knocking the gravity fed charcoal grills. I've never used one, but they appear to be pretty great. I just recommended one for my father-in-law, as he is a died in the wool charcoal guy. I would absolutely check them out and compare if you are in the market. It might be a great choice.

However, I must take umbrage with the assertion that pellets don't produce good smoke. Not trying to be confrontational, just giving my opinion/experience to a very common critique of pellets that I have found to be unwarranted.

I find that reputation "pellets don't produce food smoke" usually comes from people who fall into one of 2 categories-
1) They don't have significant personal experience with a pellet grill. It's always "My buddy/dad/neighbor has one", and maybe they have used it a couple times at most.
Or 2) They have only used an entry level pellet grill, and/or one with a PID controller.

Some cheaper units don't smoke as well as they grill- but that isn't the fault of the pellets. Also- people have been obsessed with keeping temperatures exact- which is why PID controllers have been introduced to pellet grills. However, we are finding that minor temperature swings produce significantly better smoke with pellets. A periodic swing of 10-15 degrees will not harm your brisket or ribs in the least, if you can get over the idea that your grill might occasionally read 235 or 265 when you have it set on 250. It does produce MUCH better smoke that way. Old school pellet grills operated this way, then went went to PID's that helped +\1 5 degrees and we lost the smoke producing temp swings. Now companies like Grilla are building that back into their r digital controllers.

Also, a pellet grill will not equate to a stick burner solely on the metric of smoking- but the inverse is true on a number of other categories too. A pellet grill isn't the right choice if you want the best dedicated smoker, but that doesn't mean it can't smoke.

I will say, pellets absolutely can and will produce smoke rings and prominent smoke flavors. I do it all the time.

I picked up another GMG yesterday. I have the larger one at the house and am taking this one to the ranch. GMG's have been a solid performer for me and much less than some of the others.

It's a hard time for all of us. Tough way to go, but at least he lived up to his name. My wife's maiden name is Kerr- which has it's roots among European sheep rustlers (that part is true).

I can only hope that gravity charcoal grills still work in heaven...

Can definitely recommend AggieSam for anyone that is looking for a Yoder.

Bought one from him a couple weeks back and the transaction and delivery was smooth as silk.

Been using it regularly since it got here and have 2 turkeys going right now for a large Thanksgiving party. The Yoder is a beast.

I bought a Z-grill as my first pellet and liked it enough to buy another. It's a good moderate choice if you're not already proficient with pellet grilling.

I just smoked a large Turkey on a Yoder YS640S. It was frozen and had been thawing in the fridge since noon Sunday. There was still a lot of ice inside so I spatchcocked it and pulled out all of the ice. Set at 225 it cooked perfectly to 165 internal in about six hours.

I still have not cooked a brisket on it, which was the only reason I wanted a pellet smoker, but have done just about everything else!

I love my Yoder!
