Trying to shoot one this weekend… probably a doe.

They're not very big, and I can't decide which gun to take

556 is 55 gn soft point, and Grendel is 123 gn SST

What would y'all use?

556 should be fine but I would up the grain if I could or lighten the Grendel. 75-90 should be perfect.

I'm almost there, so I'm kinda stuck w what I have. but yeah a 62 or 75 556 would be ideal.

May just try base of neck, but I really don't like neck shots

We gotta constantly shoot them here at the ranch because they are so prolific and does get out of hand quickly. My go to is my AR / 556 with ballistic tip and do lower neck shots. They are DRT.
My bride uses a .308 with a 120 grain handload I do.

Thanks. The meat is fantastic. Main reason I want to shoot one. Would love to shoot one big enough to shoulder mount one day, I think they're beautiful animals.
Question- I'm assuming shot placement is same as whitetail? Depending on weather the bow isn't out of the question either

I'd research it, it's a goat/antelope so might need to shoot more to the shoulder if that's your shot placement.

They are my favorite animal on the ranch. Their social structure is so cool and the body language and antics of the males is so very entertaining to me. And they have no idea they are little and have a " don't give a crap" attitude around bigger animals.

And yes Tandy I recommend 6.5 grendel…pictured here - my eye guy built grendel I used in January. Much more precise gun than my 556 which is more respectful to the animal.

Agree on the accuracy. I can shoot less than 1.5 MOA out to 300 with my 12" Grendel. 556 shoots about 2 MOA at 100

6.5g and 6.8spc seem to be more accurate out of the box. Limited experience but most of the ones I have fired are sub MOA with me being a novice shooter

Check out the mount I just got back last month - I had the guy darken the horns a bit to make the black fur really pop. My wife liked it so much she was literally like…you can add a few of his buddies to the wall if you want…

Caution you on Exotic animal dealers..., lots of crooks in the business. I can put you in touch with one of the best in the business and an good Aggie with a WFS degree.
He will sell you quality healthy animals. Fair and honest and has compassion and cares for the animals.

Also. For you guys hunting mature male BB. Hunt them in the late winter.... they turn darker in the winter to absorb more heat.
They gotta be mature to be all black but they are darker in the winter than summer.
They lighten in the summer to repel heat.

Plans changed. One of the older bucks broke off most of both horns. Gonna try with the bow in the am.

Like I said earlier, I've always wanted one on the wall. Seriously consider shoulder mounting him and having taxi rebuild horns. They have game cam pics so I could prob estimate horn length.

Yeah I'm not looking to deal with an exotics dealer, I know one personally and wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire. I just didn't know if y'all had so many that y'all trapped them and sold them on the hoof.

I heard the freeze pretty much tripled the price of them. Not sure if that is still the case.

We did not lose any. Lots of folks have exotics and have no idea how to take care of them in cold. Sad really
Chris Atkinson is the man I use. And only him. He sells his own stock from his ranch and they are super healthy and quality animals. My neighbor just bought 4 does (bred) and two males... a young guy about 6" and younger mature male.
