The idea of hunting the area around Rocksprings has been intriguing to me...even though I've never been there before, ha! I occasionally find myself going down rabbit holes looking at small hunting properties for sale out there.

Just checking to see if anyone knew of any family friendly ranches out that way that sell hunts?

Whitetail and/or exotics

Baker 3 does hunts.

Thanks! I found Baker 3 Ranch…I'm guessing that is it?

Any others out there?

Yes, that was a typo while bouncing around on a ranch road. My apologies.

Seems like the standard thing out there is taking multi thousand acre ranches and breaking them into 150 acre "hunting parcels." I've never been out there, but looking at the terrain I'd assume anything less than 500 acres is unreasonable to hunt on, no?

Not necessarily. A friend has a 130 acre ranchette out there and really enjoys it. They built a small off the grid cabin and use it often. Lots of game but they also take several axis deer each year. Very remote and rough country.

This is what I have in mind…but not sure how realistic it is!

My lease is off 377 between Rocksprings and Junction. Shot my first deer there at 11 in '83 and have been fortunate enough to be able to get my own spot about 10 years ago. My uncle and now my son-in-law are on the lease as well. We have 360 acre pasture with 4 hunters and 6 stand locations as options depending on morning/evening sun and wind direction. We put fences around the feeders as land owner runs goats there for a few months during birthing/weaning season. I love the location because we usually make a run to the low water crossing on the Llano River just north of us to hang out and listen to college football on Saturday afternoons before the evening sit.

Geography of the property really dictates the number of stands you can effectively place safely. We typically see 12 to 15 deer per feeder location. We are right on bluff overlooking the South Llano river where it is primarily dry (south of 700 Springs Ranch). There are a lot of animals along these river bottoms and all of our shots are from hilltops shooting downhill. We lost a lot of axis during the freeze, but whitetail needed some decrease in competition for browse. Nature finds away.

The stars, sunrises and sunsets out there in that clean air are phenomenal. It is rough country, but absolutely beautiful in it's own way.

Why? It seems so sparse out there I couldn't see more than 3 or 4 minutes stands on a couple hundred acres. If you're trying to bring a family out and not shoot the place out 4-500 would seem like the minimum. Is it dense enough out there to do more than that?

In short, yes. Plus the deer densities are, well, dense.

For example, we had 70 acres with two two-man tower stands plus a tripod. And were surrounded by other 40-50 acre tracts. We had plenty of deer and it was rare to get skunked during a sit.

Then again, we were selective with what we shot. But the freezer was never empty.

Hell I wish we had 500 acres out there.

Hell, that's great news. Those 150 acre tracts are about as reasonable as you can get in Texas. Only worry is if everybody around you thinks the same thing you're going to rely on a lot of people being responsible

Where are you seeing these tracts advertised for sale? I'm getting frustrated hunting closer in to central Texas and wanted to see what other options there might be, plus would be cool to have some exotics to shoot.

I bought a place out at high lonesome ranch in Val Verde about an hour west of rocksprings and I like it.

Beautiful country
