I'm in the initial stages of learning about the AR-10 platform. I built a pretty upscale 6.8 about 5 years ago and now I've got tons of 243 ammo laying around that I'd put to use in an AR-10.

I'd be interested in hearing about the differences between the DPMS and the other format/type. I'm looking to build a 16-18" ranch/hog gun (< 150 yards) that I can carry to a degree, but I know those suckers are pretty heavy typically. I've seen some pretty good deals on Aero and Wilson Combat matched receivers, but any ideas would be welcome.

I built me an ar10 a few years back. After doing a bunch of looking I went ahead and just bought a receiver set and hand guard from aero precision. Seemed like there were a lot of options but really have to pay attention in uppers and hand guard a for which ones match up.

Yes they are heavy and often more finicky than the 15 platform.

Ar10 is not light. My 13.5 inch with 20 rd mag is 14lbs.

Standing no problem….stalking, yeah not light.

Are you open to just buying a complete ar-10 instead of building. There is not really milspec

This as well. I would buy a complete rifle.

You can build a pretty light AR10. I've got a 14# bench shooter and a an 8# build, I think someone was selling a 6.5# build (empty) not too long ago. Of course, the lighter builds can generally skyrocket your budget.

I'd just buy a "builders set" lower/upper and handguard. Take a lot of the guess work out of it. you can generally hodgepodge the rest of it together based on personal preferences.

I have a 2A Arms XLR-18 that weighs 6.75lbs.

EyeGuy built me a .308 upper some time ago. I paired it with a simple PSA lower and a Geissele trigger. It weighs more than a cinder block. I run it suppressed as a blind gun and love it for that purpose.

It absolutely hates cheap surplus ammo. Besides it weighing more than a boat anchor, that's the only downside.

I run a suppressed 6.5CM that has become my son's go to for the blind hunting. It's heavy with glass and a can.

I'd encourage you to go the ar15 route. Good barrel, trigger, gas system. Will be a shooter.

My last 6.5 Grendels have been ragged hole shooters. Same for the 6mm ARC.

FNAR is the ultimate hog/ranch gun imo. But it is a heavy beast. I don't think it is still in production but can be found online.

Adjustable gas block. That was the number 1 part that helped cycle and run correctly with a suppressor

There's two main patterns- DPMS and Armalite. They're easily told apart by the back of the seam of the receivers (where the buffer tube threads are. DPMS is shaped like an AR15, while the Armalite has a straight line that is angled upwards. Might look into Rugers new small frame 308 or POF Rogue if you want something less than about 10 pounds with a scope. Both of those start under 7, with the rogue being about 6 pounds.

I've built around 5 AR-10s. All DPMS pattern.

My three light weights are all 8lbs or just under. Put a ram hurting on my wallet.

I prefer the 2A Xanthos or Roam Rifle receivers.

Ditto. I put mine together and use a gas block that is adjustable with a long Allen wrench. Set it up for a silencer
Accurate but don't shoot it much.

easy to forget, a 20 rd mag of 308 weighs about 3lbs.

throw on a scope and suppressor. you're in the 14lb overall weight range.

I stalked with a 14lb rifle last weekend....its not light.

I've got a nice 18" 6.5 Creedmoor built on matching Aero receivers. Built with really nice parts.

I'd be willing to break the rig down if you're looking for just a receiver set, barrel, etc. separately.

Great gun. But I have a 16" that shoots lighter bullets lights out and 20" lightweight that I'm keeping.

Curious what you might be asking for the complete rifle? If it does not go the OP.
