I've hunted 5 different ranches in the last 10 years on axis hunts and have never had an easy time getting on them. Are they that skittish everywhere or am I just getting unlucky? I shot a really nice buck like 20 years ago, but even that hunt took 3 days to get on them. Two places I know didn't have many, so that makes sense, but 3 had quite a few and the best we did was see them running while we were riding around. My wife is wanting a big buck (32"+) and we just keep striking out. We are hunting different stands so it's not my luck rubbing off on her.

Are there any places around that y'all know of that you'll at least get an opportunity during a 2-3 day hunt?

Are these free range or high fence places? High fence you will for sure get a crack at one most places. Will just depend how much of a hunt you want vs going to a 20-30 acre "ranch" and shooting one

Every time I've been to Urban Ags place down in Bend, TX I see a lot of Axis. He got some good ones.

All 5 of the past places were high fenced. The one this past weekend I think really only has one bigger herd, but there's a shinoak (I think I spelled it right) patch of 100+ acres that they can just disappear in. You may occasionally see one riding around or hunting if you're lucky.

The one I killed was actually on a low fence place in Hunt when I was in high school. It just seems like finding a trophy is a lot harder than finding a trophy of any other species.

Here is my free range/low fence he went just a hair over 34 on his long side. Both of my axis have been spot and stalk during the summer when they are in rut!

If you consistently don't see Axis and other people do then I have bad news for you.

Her odds would increase drastically if you would let her go on the hunt herself and leave your bad juju at home with john Wayne.

My parents house is low fence in Hunt, Texas and on any given day you're almost certain to see Axis, whitetail and blackbuck. Frequently fallow and rarely Sika or other random exotics.

Well I guess I need to quit high fence hunting since low fence sounds so much easier.

Axis don't all go into rut at one particular times of the year....an axis buck goes into rut determined by his birthday. Axis does do the same. That's why in a single herd on a ranch you can have bucks with no head gear that just shed, bucks just starting to grow antlers, bucks in velvet and bucks in hard horns all in the same herd. This makes the herd have great genetic diversity and make hunts challenging.
As bucks age their main beams get longer to an extent. Then the caudal tines will start growing in length and if left to age enough the caudal tines will reach the same height as the main beams. Then they start putting on mass.
Bucks that score high in SCI record books will not necessarily be the ones with the longest main frames. The mass and caudal time length really add to the score but they have to left to mature to reach that potential.
They are cool animals imho.

High fence. He's got a wide variety of animals in there too

We are low fenced in far western Comal County (west of Bulverde) and see them pretty regularly, but during whitetail season, they are typically very jumpy and easily spooked. We had two groups (about 10-12 total) caught on game cams at different times that were hanging around the property. I got one this year in late January after the regular hunting season was over.

I saw a herd of 25 axis this morning while on my walk at South Llano River State Park in Junction. Some of you guys need to put in for the hunts this winter.

I spent 5 days during the rut sitting in blinds in a 1250 acre low fence and saw one decent buck and took him at the last minute. Far more success on a 20,000 acre low fence northeast of bracketville by walking through thick stuff where they should be and literally sitting down and waited a couple hours and the herd walked within 20 yards of me. I'll never sit in a blind hunting axis again. The ultra slow walk in the woods was way more fun and paid off. They aren't ninjas - just seems like they just don't train to feeders like other species.

I know this is going to sound obvious, cause it is, but they're hunted year round. They constantly have pressure on them in free range and high fence herds and they tend to be wary because of it. Not to mention the amount of axis trapping that occurs nowadays.

Edit to add - wasn't trying to sound like a dick, just noting my personal observation.

At my Sister's place they have 8 or 10 species of exotics roaming around. The Axis seem to be the most skittish to me. I don't know that they consistently come to a feeder. They are the ones getting that plow from you. Do you want me to see what a big axis buck would run ya for her to shoot?

Yea, we are going to try to go on another hunt at some point (if the dog, baby and schedule allows) and see if she can get something. If anyone has a hookup let me know.

BIL has a place in Rocksprings. They have axis come through sporadically but they're very unpredictable. It took him close to a year to bag his first one and it wasn't a trophy by any means.

Had the opportunity to hunt King Ranch for whitetail only but saw plenty of axis. They were certainly more attentive to my presence than whitetail, but not overly skittish. Now just need to shoot one

I'm guessing that they have recovered/are recovering from the die off during the freeze?

Saw a lot of pics of ranches with Axis deer laying everywhere.

I always chalked it up to Axis just have bigger numbers. It is common for me to have 20-30 deer come to the feeder where I only will have 6-8 WT.

More eyes and more ears. I have to make sure my window is open before the feeder goes off. Any little sound or movement and they will hear it. They have busted me just the taking the safety off on a still cold morning.

I hunt from the cabin. I can't really call it hunting- more like meat harvesting. Very lazy "hunting". I get out of bed make coffee and wait. I could move the feeder back but the slope of the lean to carport is such that it would be out of sight if I moved it down hill much further. It is about 90 yards now.

+1 for Kerr county ones being quite calm.

I've had a herd watch me shoot a plate rack from maybe 30 yards away.
