We picked this guy up last week. Captain Augustus McCrae. We usually call him Gus, but my son likes to say the full name.

Gawd Dammit....because all my dogs' names begin with that when they are in trouble.

My dad always named his after country singers, real ones. Some would get the same name with a number, there were several Ray Prices, George Straits & Bob Wills, and there had to have been at least 4 Hanks over the years. He would just use the first name unless he was being very specific about something.

His GOAT was named Mr.Shorty, after the Marty Robbins song.

Speaking of Clovis (I also like the name a lot) you could also pick from the rest of the family, Ardel, Burnel, Raynel, W.L., Lanel, Odel, Udel, Marcel, Claude, Newgene, and Clovis along with Aunt Pat and Uncle Versie.

First dog we had was named Cooter Brown - called Cooter.

Current dog's registered name is Texas Opie Juan Kanobi - we call him Opie....debate on whether it's from Andy Griffith or Sons of Anarchy.

More often its "Ope" or "Ophelius the Wonder Dog" depending on what we (or he) is doing. Agree on one syllable names working best - especially when hunting so he's trained under Ope for field work.

My Grandpa named all his dogs Jack. I name my dogs Rocky. Not to be confused with our fellow poster and Rock Star Rocky The Dog.

A little off topic, but Boykin Mill is an interesting place. Has a pond that was first dammed in 1792 to run a sawmill and grist mill. The mill pond, and circa-1900 mill that replaced earlier ones still belong to the Boykin family. Was the site of an 1860 tragedy that led to the drowning of dozens of people who were floating on a barge in the pond.

April 18, 1865, one of the last Civil War battles in South Carolina was fought there, and the last Union Officer to die in the war was killed. LT. Edward Stevens of the Massachusetts 54th infantry was shot by 14-year-old Burwell Henry Boykin. He turned 15 the next day.

There is also a great place to eat, the Mill Pond Steakhouse, overlooking the pond. Been there, and enjoyed it a lot.

Derail over.

Was given a pair of half-grown Walker hound brothers once and named them Clyde and Vern.

Damn they tore up some stuff. I didn't hunt them so moved them on pretty quick.

We named our latest pup yippie and call her yip for short. Seems to be a pretty big hit with everyone so far. I don't know if it works for a Boykin but it seems to fit our Cowdog pretty good.

I read the title wrong, but maybe just name him Help. You'd get lots of response anytime you were calling him.

When I was little, my sister (age 5) named her dog, Come On. I don't think that dog ever learned how to stay.

A Dog Named Sex

By Morty Storm

Everybody who has a dog calls him "Rover" or "Boy." I call mine "Sex." He's a great pal, but he has caused me a great deal of embarrassment.

When I went to city hall to renew his dog license, I told the clerk I would like a license for Sex. He said, "I'd like one too!"

Then, I said, "But this is a dog." He said he didn't care what she looked like. Then, I said, "You don't understand, I've had Sex since I was 9 years old." He winked and said, "You must have been quite a kid."

When I got married and went on my honeymoon, I took the dog with me. I told the motel clerk that I wanted a room for my wife and me and a special room for Sex.

He said, "You don't need a special room. As long as you pay your bill, we don't care what you do." I said, "Look, you don't seem to understand. Sex keeps me awake at night." The clerk said, "Funny -- I have the same problem."

One day, I entered Sex in a contest, but before the competition began, the dog ran away. Another contestant asked me why I was just standing there, looking disappointed. I told him I had planned to have Sex in the contest. He told me I should have sold my own tickets. "But you don't understand," I said, "I had hoped to have Sex on TV." He said, "Now that cable is all over the place, it's no big deal anymore."

When my wife and I separated, we went to court to fight for custody of the dog. I said, "Your honor, I had Sex before I was married." The judge said, "The courtroom isn't a confessional. Stick to the case, please."

Then, I told him that after I was married, Sex left me. He said, "Me too."

Last night, Sex ran off again. I spent hours looking all over town for him. A cop came over to me and asked, "What are you doing in this alley at 4 o'clock in the morning?" I told him that I was looking for Sex. My case comes up Friday.
