If I'm not cooking at home, I always enjoyed the steaks at Mcbrides Steakhouse in Wichita Falls. It was a wonderful thing when I went with my daughter and granddaughter through there couple of months ago, so I took them there to eat. Granddaughter wanted the 14 oz ribeye, and didn't leave a dadgum scrap for me to scavenge!

Papas might be one of the best. Legit

But I do not think they have been to any of these restaurants. Unless it's moved in the last year, the reata is in its own building (not on top of the holland). It also has zero view and very average food.

While there are some decent steaks on that list, they missed a bunch of really good steakhouses. Might as well have added Texas Roadhouse to that list.

I know there are great steaks everywhere but there is a hidden gem in the Panhandle. The Double XL is about 20 minutes east of Dumas then south on a dirt road for a few miles. It is reservation only and Charlie (chef) is a classically trained chef who decided to do things his way in his home.

They are only open weekends, have 2 seatings 5 pm and 7 pm. You get a 16 oz ribeye (hand cut so usually closer to 20-22) fantastic baked potato, hot link, a few grilled shrimp, homemade salad and homemade desert (his wife actually bakes all of the deserts and she is an absolute sweetheart).

You get to bring your own booze and enjoy a meal with a great view and no cell phone service!

Charlie runs a non profit for returning folks to society after they've made poor choices in their lives. The entire waitstaff is made up of folks in his program and only those who are close to "graduating" his program get to work in the restaurant. I've been to some higher end steakhouses and the food and services at Charlie's is head and shoulders above the likes of RC and FDC

The meal is $45/person and includes the above. They take cash only and it's worth every penny.

I am not usually a fan of steakhouses and am in the "they're better at home" camp but that place sounds like it's worth the trip

two of their top 20 are Porters and the Republic

Had Porters around Christmas time. I am not being hyperbolic when I say it was one of the worst steakhouse experiences I have had.
Some things never change. We quit going a couple of years ago. I would guess the manager is still sitting at the bar drinking instead of tending to business.

Perini Ranch is a bucket list destination. Well worth a stop.

Will also heartily second jtp01's assessment of Double XL. Best place to have a steak in the Panhandle. It was $40 a plate when we last went and we tipped 25%, and it was still a bargain. I got a second meal out of the leftovers and the wife got three. Huge portions and excellent quality.

Our waiter was very good and heavily tattooed. I didn't know the back story when we went. Had I, we would have tipped even more

I think these lists are like anything else. You could actually put the worlds best restuarants in this list and people would complain. For instance, Pappas steakhouse is pretty meh to me. I feel like it gets thrown into lists like this just because of the name....like a 200 dollar Nike shoe. It's not that it's bad, its just that its OK to me. Not great, take it or leave it, just another restuarant.

I also recently tried J Prime Steakhouse, and it has hands down, blown out every place I've ever eaten my whole life. It's so good, Im not even going to debate it with someone whether 'their' steakhouse is better. It's not. We went there for our anniversary after making a reservation. They blew the whole experience out of the water. The reviews are right.

Well, we can certainly laugh about it now, but I recall a day back when money was short and I couldn't wait for Tuesday nights at Bonanza.

I still can't say I've ever had a better hamburger steak, but I'll grant that a man's memory tends to get clouded with age.

As for today's high end steakhouses, I just dunno. Consistency has always been a problem at the stuffed shirt places I've been.

One time I'll get a steak that's damn well worth the money. The next time I'm disappointed as hell.

Go figure.

I used to love it when I was a kid. I'm all spoiled now eating prime or Wagyu regularly, but when I was a kid and my parents were pinching pennies, Bonanza was a treat.

Round Top has really upped its food game. We almost always try to get there when traveling to College Station around dinner time. Or hit Royer's on Sunday going home for their fried chicken. There are several legit spots.

Its good in the way that its exactly the type of place that the founders of Texas Roadhouse envisioned their restaurant to be someday. Its by no means the best steak within 100 miles of it due to the close proximity of Perini Ranch and Black Cur in Coleman. The sides are sorta meh, but you do get a lot of beef for the money, and they use a ton of garlic which I like. For what they are, they're near the top, but compared to these high end steak places, nowhere close.

Haven't been to most so can't comment on the entirety of the list but lol at fogo de chao and Ruth Chris. Pappas Bros is a chain but absolutely deserves to be on this list. Best steakhouse in houston, imo, and one of the best I've been to.
Pappa's isn't really a chain in the sense - they have 3 locations, and are absolutely 100% legit. I'd put them up against any other steakhouse you can find.

Pappa's Steak house is great. Their BBQ place in Dallas is trash.

Not a fan of the BBQ, but will go there for the burger at the BBQ joint. 100% legit.

Never had the burger. Will give it a try

Worth it, no doubt

The BBQ was better when it was Luther's (not that it was anything great). Pappas f'd that up just like they did Luby's.

I don't understand the dogging on Ruth's Chris. I get that it's a chain, but for an anniversary dinner it's always been great with a great atmosphere.

That's not a testament that it is the best ever, but I crack up at the scoffing like it's K-Bob's.

Didn't reread the whole thread. But you're the only one comparing it to K-Bobs. Little hyperbole to take that from someone saying it isn't a top 20 steakhouse in Texas.

I was a cook at Bonanza when I was a teen for two years. The ribeyes would almost fall apart they were so tender. And they were not fatty like they are now. I never eat ribeyes now because of the fat. I have no idea what has changed in the beef industry, but the steaks back then were better, imho.

Pretty weak list. Some notable spots left off Hermann Sons Steakhouse in Hondo, Myron's Prime Steakhouse in New Braunfels, Branding Iron in Kerrville, and Doc's Fish Camp & Grill in Marble Falls.
Hermann Sons is hugely inconsistent. They change cooks about as often as normal people change underwear. And it's a shame, as I grew up there, and even then it would be great one week, and terrible two weeks later.

I'm in the camp of cooking them at home. Nolan Ryan's Goodstock is around the corner from me, and I haven't had a bad piece of meat from that shop. They're not cheap, but I guess that's why it's good every time.
