Replace the wires and hope it works?

Looks like a mouse got into my mowers wires.

Wish JD had some splits somewhere on the harness, but I am not seeing any. Had to take the entire thing off.

One other spot that is chewed up.

I'd see if I could splice into that with some heat shrink butt connectors and jumper wires as a temp fix.

Then put a new harness on order.

Got to love soy based eco friendly wire insulation. Rodents love the stuff.

I'm going to go by JD tomorrow and see what the cost is. I don't have a heat gun, but, if it is cheaper compared to the harness, I will get another tool.

A lighter will do just fine. Can't remember ever in my life that I drug out a heat gun for heat shrink.

Splice and solder and then wrap if you want to put a lil extra effort into it. Soldering irons are cheap and easy to use and I consider it basic home fix equipment these days.

Reminds me of the Challenger Columbia incident. The environmentally friendly foam peeled of the tank and punctured the wing. If you going to space, you going to space. There ain't no environmentally friendly way to travel in space. Either you going to space, or you're not.

But now we using wiring insulation thats smells like food to a rat.

You see this all the time now. Mice getting in somewhere and wrecking a wiring harness.

I'd don't remember it being that big of a problem 20 years ago. It happened but not as much as now.

That looks like an old GM alternator plug. I'd find a replacement pigtail and replace the end past the chewed up section.

Splicing wife's is easy, cheap, and it works. Zero need for new harness. Somebody mentioned the space shuttle. This is not rocket science.

Looks to me like the break is far enough from the plug, that you could simply splice.

But the individual wires and connectors can be removed from the plug, and replaced if not.

This is what I've been using lately for heat shrink. Its refillable butane. The tip is pretty fragile. It could last one use or a year. Its one of those deals. But overall pretty good.

That's a repair for me. I'd never buy a new harness over that. Especially from Deere. They will gouge you for it and it's going to work as good as it did.

If you are in San Antonio, bring it by my house. I've got split loom, 15 colors of wire, solder, waterproof heat shrink, and a heat gun. We can fix it up and complain about the weather and rats.

Rats are going to eat insulation no matter what. They ate it on my 1947 Farmall. They ate it on my 2005 super duty, they eat it on just about anything that's in their way or they feel like eating. On my truck they ate the wiring and vacuum lines for the AC. It took a few hours to rebuild and fix that mess.

Appreciate it all.

Looks like I will head to the local hardware store and get some wire and heat tape.

I know this is a typo. Can't believe no one has asked about wife splicing yet though.

Rodent Stopper. I've used the aerosol can on my lease jeep for the last several years. I've had zero problems since.

I get mine at the feed store in Graham but you can find it online.

You have a link to this claim of the foam being environmentally friendly as a cause for it falling off?

but since you on the consoiracy wagon

5. The foam came off because of EPA regulations banning stronger glue that used Freon.

The Environmental Protection Agency did ban CFC-11 in the mid-1990s, and NASA eventually selected an alternative but it wasn't used in the section of the external tank where the fatal chunk tore off. A different foam, not covered by the EPA regulation, had been used there, so the cause of the shedding had nothing to do with environmental concerns.
