New Atlas: Salt-loaded BioBullets kill zebra mussels by passing as food.

Cambridge is testing out new technology that basically poisons the mussels with stuff that won't hurt anything else.

Here's hoping.

Sounds awesome (and plausible in a lab setting). Maybe it can have some effect in bodies of water that haven't already been over-run.

It's too late for the Great Lakes trout and salmon fisheries, but if you're a scuba diver you love zebra mussels.

My first question is what impact will it have on native mussels, but they apparently got that figured out.

LBJ has never been so clear. Just don't try to grab the dock posts while you're swimming.

I shot a good number of salty bio bullets into clams in my day.

I sell chemicals to power plants to treat their effluent for Zebra muscles. It's a quat chemistry. Also use it in pools and aquariums.

The problem is it costs 10s of millions of dollars in research and regulatory fees to create and register a new biocide so you have to Find new uses for old ones. Unless our EPA and Fifra regs change.

I wish they would come up with something like this for wild hogs
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I know they did other treatments too, but we could see those carp munching down all the time. For a while we thought we were seeing alligators because they were huge and would hang out at the surface with barely any movement.

I'd nearly forgotten how bad that stuff got and at the time we didn't think it would ever get under control

I remember fishing in Conroe when I was a kid, it was towards the tale end when if you caught a grass carp you had to kill it and throw it back in.
