I bought a Ruger 10/22 Model # 31166. I am looking at buying a new scope for it. I was thinking about the Leupold 3-9X40 VX-Freedom with Hunt-Plex or the Rudolph H1 3.5-14X44 T3 reticle. I have never used a Rudolph scope before. I have seen people on here use them, how do these two scopes compare to each other?

This rifle will be to teach my grandkids how to shoot with.

Ruger 10/22 Model 31166

Leupold Scope Vx-Freedom

Rudolph H1 Scope

Thanks for the advice and help!

I've got a couple of affordable 3-9s I'm selling that would be perfect on a 22LR. One of mine came off a rimfire gun. Be happy to help out a kiddo and sell at a discount.

I really like this one for the .22. Illuminated reticle and different reticles for subs made for .22's at a very affordable price. I like the 12 power scope over the 9 as the game you are after with a .22 is typically smaller.

also consider a red dot for teaching kids, especially if they are on the younger side. Someone on here or another forum suggested that as an "easy button" to get them hitting things quickly and consistently to get excited about shooting. I followed this advice and am a fan of the results. Now that he's got the basics and enthusiasm for hitting things, I'm about to swap it for a traditional 4x or 3-9 to get used to before moving to centerfire.

One thing to keep in mind on scopes without adjustable focus/parallax is the fixed parallax distance. Most fixed scopes for a 22 LR is set at 50 yards (this is preferred), but other scopes usually have the parallax set at 100 or 150 yards. So for best shooting at closer ranges, rimfire scopes with a shorter parallax distance are usually preferred.

We have another Ruger 10/22 carbine with a red dot on it. It belongs to my daughter and she wanted to start shooting with a scope more. I saw this new Ruger and figured I would just buy it now and buy a nice decent scope for it. That away we have both and can teach the little ones with both.

My daughter got mad at me because I made her start shooting with iron sights, but now her niece gets to start off with a red dot and scope! lol

This is one of the things I did take into consideration when I was looking at scopes. To be honest I was thinking about even spending a little more for a scope with an adjustable parallax if I went with a Leupold scope. I really like the Rudolph H1 and it has the adjustable parallax. Was just not sure how it compared to the Leupolds.

BattleGrackle and TikkaShooter,

BattleGrackle if you see one of the scopes you like that TikkaShooter has, please don't wait for me. I am really thinking about getting the Rudolph H1 scope. I might put it on my 30-06 or 308 and just move the old Bushnell or Vortex scope over to the new Ruger.

This was one of the reasons why I did not want to go down this road! Every time I start looking at scopes for our .22LRs I end up looking at a newer scope for my other rifles and want to move the old scopes down.

TikkaShooter if BattleGrackle does buy one just let me know what you have left.

Thanks again!

This is a .22.

I put a Nikon Pro Rimfire or some such on my custom 10/22. I don't know what I paid for it. It's killed 7 raccoons last month from 50 yards near the chicken coop in the dark. I put all my money to volquartsen parts inside the rifle that made far better upgrades. I felt like spending more than 150 on a scope for a .22 was a waste of money. There are some real upgrades you can make that will make real differences in that rifle.

Amazon has the Burris Fullfields for 145 bucks shipped brand new along with some vortex options in the same price point.
