Haven't really done much with land navigation since my days in Corps of Cadets, and ROTC at SFA but was pretty good at it and really enjoyed it. I need to get out and get more exercise (I hate treadmills, too big for a bike right now, and not a fan of running). Figure I can get back into land navigation and get more exercise doing something I enjoy. That being said, are there any known land navigation courses in and around the Lockhart and surrounding areas? Think it would be more fun being out in the countryside and not limited to keeping on roads.

Do the state parks have things like this within them, what about frisbee golf courses, are there typically maps that mark hole locations that could be used as way points and destination points?

Thanks, this looks like a good place to start to brush up on the skills. Will definitely investigate further.

REI does classes also.

Just brushing up, there is plenty on youtube.

local orienteering club may have a semi permanent course set up. Orienteering is sorta like terrain association vs dead reckoning but just hit the markers, get an 8 or 10 digit grid with your phone and come back some other day and navigate the course.

Have been reading up the Austin clubs site, does not seem to be all that active unfortunately. I have been looking more and more at using some of the frisbee golf courses in the area, it is helpful to have known way points to target on the map. Throw an old 20 sided die to determine the order to run the holes and go for it.

I remember many a night running the golf courses around Northern Virginia shooting azimuths to different holes and trekking around as if we owned the place. Ahhh the days of youth.
