Hell everything is so much more inexpensive now given inflation, the cheap ARs are now so much cheaper than 15 years ago and the cheap (but lesser quality) AKs are probably about the same price.

Used to be a thousand bucks for an AR and gosh I dont know $400 for an AK... SKS were practically dirt cheap

Chinese is banned, Russian is banned, parts kits are drying up.

In your shoes I would buy a Zastava Zpap and some surplus Yugo furniture.

That will be about as close to an old school com bloc wood and steel AK as you can easily get these days.

I have a yugo NPAP I might part with for an exorbitant price. I love that thing.

I have one of these I bought back in 1994 for around $250-300. I have fed thousands and thousands of rounds into it over the years and don't think I've ever had a single misfire. Unbelievably reliable weapon.

South of 800 is a great deal for a new zpap. They were going for 1100ish a few months ago. Prices are trickling down. Pre pandemic they were 650.

Sharkin pretty well got it, anything near 900 these days is an okay buy.

Frankly, even if other "good" AKs were priced at 700 and these were 900 I'd be tempted by them. Bulged trunnions, chrome lined barrels, made in a factory that's been cranking them out for decades....the Zastavas are still a good quality buy while most of the other quality AKs are either imported in tiny amounts or banned completely.

Yeah since the pandemic started messing with supply chains and materials costs, I don't think I've seen a new ZPAP for cheaper than $900. If you find one for less, send me the link and I'm in for another. Normal price on them has hovered around $1,000 or more recently. This just got posted to r/gundeals yesterday with $899 being a "deal"

Another option is the WASR-10, which is made in Romania, and uses the more "standardized" furniture pattern, so it's a little easier to find surplus furniture for it, including the Romanian dong. But personally I think the ZPAP is a better quality rifle, fit and finish, etc, on top of having a receiver that's 1.5x the thickness of the WASR.

I have a ton of Romanian and Yugo battle field pickup furniture sets left over from the Balkans war. If you buy a plastic gun, I'll be happy to sell you a set. Unfortunately the yugo stuff all came from underfolders so no butt stocks.
