I have been planting Early Girl for years. I like them because they seem to get off the vine before the bad heat hits and causes the plant to go downhill. They are determinate, though.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good indeterminate variety? Thanks in advance.

I planted a Lemon Boy last fall for a fall tomato, and it did surprisingly well for a late planted fall tomato. I've got one in the ground right now that I'm going to let one of the suckers take off and have two main branches instead of one.

I plant about 12 different varieties of tomatoes. I'll have to remember what types I planted last year. I get some from a farmer friend which are the best tasting ever, and grow some from seed.

Cherokee purples are great heirloom indeterminate variety. Little bit more finicky since its heirloom. Should be available at most decent nurseries and co-ops.

Boxcar Willie and Big Beef are also a good indeterminate hybrid varieties. I've had good success with these but grow from seed, which is probably too late for you if you're in Texas. Harder to find these as seedlings.

If you have had problems with heat and dry conditions with your Early Girls, Phoenix is a really good determinate option that does really well in the dog days of summer. Very heat tolerant and are almost impossible to crack from heavy watering.

Black cherry is my current favorite. I like the little ones. Not a big fan of the big softball sized tomatoes.

Thanks for the replies. Our local mom-and-pop nursury is supposed to get some new plants in tomorrow morning. I will try and look for some of the ones mentioned above.

I usually only plant roma tomatoes. Although smaller i really like how they work in my garden salsa.

Great producer for me has been the Creole variety, an indeterminate variety that easily reaches 4-5 ft in height.

Early Girl are indeterminate not determinate. There is a bush variety that is determinate.

Another vote for "Celebrity". Year in and hear out it has always been my most consistent.

Early Girl IS indeterminate.

My all time favorite variety is Roma.

Wow, ok, y'all are right. Early Girl is indeterminant. I guess I always have had them mature nearly all at once so I thought they were determinant. I might try a few different ones listed above this year and pick up some Early Girls too if they have them.

I started growing two tomatoes new to me last year. Roadster and Red Snapper.
Flavor and quality was Excellent. Our local feed store starting selling them last year.
Planted a dozen each in our 60 plant tomato plot.

I read about them and found out Sakata Seed bred them for flavor and disease resistance. As wet and miserable as May-June 2021 was, we made a great crop. Highly recommend them.

They are determinate but in my humid coastal climate, tomato production season is over at the same time for both determinate and indeterminate varieties. I've switched to almost 100% determinate varieties.

Has anyone found one of the cherry/tiny pear shaped yellow tomatoes that has much taste? Mine produce like mad, but just don't taste great.

I've grown probably 20-30 different varieties in some 9B, Houston. This year I have 12 varieties in 20 plants. the only new one for me is Viva Italia.

What works for me are; Champion, Early Girl, Cherokee Purple, Juliet, Black Krim (Slava Ukraina), Parks Whopper, Beefmaster, Big Boy, Big Beef, Sweet Million, Roma. Others I've grown that did well here were Goliath, Brandywine. Some take the humidity and heat better than others. That Juliet will keep going until you are tired of messing with it.

Sorry B-1 83, I know those Celebrity's are easy to grow, but taste is about a 2 out of 10.

My favorite is the Black Krim, wife likes the Beefmaster.

Haven't tried these per se, but Johnny's is reliable as they come. The description sounds like what you might be looking for.

I'll echo what someone else said about Celebrity, they are consistent and reliable, but I've always found them to be lacking in the flavor department.

It's been years since I planted a garden, but the rock squirrels in the greenbelt behind my house agree with this assessment.

We quit growing them for exactly that reason, no flavor. We dehydrate a lot and that process usually increases the flavor of most tomatoes. But not the pear shaped, yellow ones. The only yellow ones we use are Sun Gold, a cherry tomato.

Cherokee Purple if I just have to have a an heirloom

Better Boy otherwise. These outperform every variety I have ever planted and I have planted a ton. Its a big tomato with good flavor and disease resistance.

Not gonna lie, if it was good enough for Pawpaw, it's good enough for me. I have seriously tried all kinds of neat varities and they do OK, but many heirlooms will cateye, some will be a constant battle with disease. Some of my favorite 'Not too bad" varities are jubilee, celebrity, best boy, black krim, brandywine varieties, and probably some others.

His last garden was probably early 90's. I remember asking him why he planted 100 tomato ( he was 80), "He said well thats all I could get".

It's in the blood.

Select smaller tomato varieties if you have trouble battling the heat.

There are really good cherry and mid sized tomatoes that will ripen fast and harvest more often.

4th of July is a great prolific tomato about the size of Roma without the thickened skin. Indeterminate with only 49 days to maturity.

I have tried other varieties in the Houston area and early girl has so far been the most productive. There is a heat tolerant variety called floriamerica that others have had good luck using.

However, last year a friend gave me two cherry tomato plants called sungold. They did well and tasted incredible. They are orange rather than red and are sweet with a little bit of orangey flavor.

I am growing them this year and will grow them every year from now on.
