Anyone else hunting south zone opening day? Got the bow out and got set up in a pop up at 0630 this morning a couple hundred yards from the roost this morning and man were they lighting it up with some spring thunder. About 830 they roll around but are about 100 yards off going south. Couldn't call them in but they were still in big groups. After the action settled made a move to a diff area and crept in to about 100 yards of another group. The way they were setup that's as close as I could get without spooking them off. Couldn't get anyone to really respond to the calls yet. But dang that was a fun morning. Unfortunately back to town for a wedding tonight. Going to try and be out again in April.

North zone for me. Not really any birds to hunt on our lease, but why waste an excuse to head out west is my reasoning. Our landowner just south has hella lots of turkeys, but he has trees big enough for roost trees. Just scrub mesquite on ours. He and I were out working one weekend, set the hog traps to try to thin the numbers, came by next morning, had like 15 turkeys trapped. That was one exciting rodeo trying to shoo them out.

what kind of a trap would catch Turkeys? Had to be tight and covered?

Yep, it was. They own a pipe and steel company back home here, so have access to lots of material. Son of his that made it had a tendency to overbuild most everything. Wasn't a pig in existence going to escape it tho.

Here a video/audio file in the dark of the gobbling from the roost. This was going on all morning. Still bummed we couldn't call em in.

we did see a bunch of deer come through. About 50/50 for bucks that had shed vs. not shed.

That begs the question. What's the first ?

Morning seks or the sound of drag peelin'?

I would say geese or cranes coming in to decoys.

I hunted DeWitt and Karnes county Saturday morning. Set up near a tree of gobblers. They gobbled at calls but would not come in. They are still running in big bachelor groups- we saw several large groups while driving around. Got to wait until they start chasing the girls- then it will be on.

Read your post about someone with a pipe company. I'm looking for structural tubing. Would you mind sharing their name or initiating contact?

Gonzales county. Hens talking occasionally. But zero gobblers heard. Must be early. Trying again in the morning.

Got to Cuero at dark yesterday, just in time to locate and put this bird to bed. Slipped in this morning at 6:20. A few tree yelps at first light got him fired up. He hit the ground 10 minutes later and gobbled once. I yelped once and shut up. He came running and was dead at 7:15. Was super pumped. My boy has killed two jakes before but this was his first mature bird.

Awesome! Did he have to shoot "through" the decoy or was the bird shaded over to the left?
raidernarizona
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He had to shoot right over that feeding hen. It's still holding air so it went unscathed.

Sorry, been away from the board, It's Metal Sales, just west of Gainesville. Number is 940 665 0336. Debbie, Peggy or Frank can fix you up.

That's a great/priceless video! Congrats. Great shot too! Looked to be 30-40 yards.

Thanks Boerne! I've watched that video probably 10 times since Saturday. It was only about a 20 yard shot. I like to keep the decoys in close, in case the bird hangs up.

Slow today. Heard lots of low yelping and fly down. A few gobbles early but silent since. Thinking they henned up - in Junction for weekend

We are in Segovia down the road from you in Junction. Classic move...saw them on the cameras...and nothing in the field.
