Go to the Leona Country Store on a Friday or Saturday night and you are liable to get something very close to the scene from Hell or High Water! I know I did and it was quite memorable.

I always like the steak scene in the Cowboy Way, not a crusty waitress, but a pretentious waiter...

"That weren't no question!"

The closest I ever came to someone like her was at the Orla general store around 2010.

About 20 years ago some coworkers and myself frequented a burger joint in downtown Fort Worth with an old petite lady who single handedly managed the entire place - took your order, cooked, served, cashiered, and cleaned up every day. Really good burgers, but if/when it came out a bit different than you ordered, don't make the mistake of telling her about it. She didn't talk much but could cut a glare that would stop you cold.

No one really knew her story until she died and the place closed. The regular customers asked around and got in touch with her son who then shared her life story in an article in the paper. She had less than $200 in her bank account when she passed away. I'll leave out the sordid details out of respect for the deceased, but she was one hell of a tough and colorful woman.

Make her coon-ass and she's just like the ladies at this little cafe in Grand Isle called the Starfish. It's about the only place open in the winter when I fish over there. Amazing po'boys and great gumbo.

One of my buddies was joking with one of the ladies one time and she just smacked him on the head with a menu and called him a "****-ass."

I hope that place survived Ida last year. Not much else did. I know the place I stay and eat in Cocodrie called Sportsman's Paradise didn't. Miss Connie owned and ran the place and she was slightly less crusty- if she likes you she's as sweet as can be but get her riled up and she might throw your ass out. Sad to say that place was demolished by Ida and they ain't rebuilding.

At Leona in November:

Sitting next to a couple trying to look at the menu on their phone when the waitress comes up.

" I don't know what it says on there but we have ribeye steak and boiled new potatoes. If you didn't come for steak, we might have some smoked chicken. You can have 12, 14, or 16oz."

They just look at her and say, "12oz ribeyes, please."

She says, "Two 12oz medium rare and 2 iced teas. The salad bar is around the corner in the hall".

They just stare and nod.

She comes to me,

"I'll have a 14oz medium rare".

She writes it down and walks away without saying anything else.

I thought I had just walked out of Hell or High Water.

Cool that they included Post in the movie. Not cool that it wasn't actually filmed in west texas.

I don't see any racks. If I don't have a table big enough to set it safely, then it's staying on my head but I have been accused of being raised in a barn so my comment is worth what you paid for it.

Yep. My dad taught me that you always take your hat off in the presence of a lady......at a funeral or the passing of the American flag...... and when you went into a house or sat down to eat.....and of course church. He gave me a pass one time...the second time he took off my hat and stepped on it...I never forgot again. He and my grandparents despised all the "wannabe drugstore cowboys" who kept their hats on.
I think about him whenever I attend a SCI convention banquet or Ducks Unlimited banquet and see all the "dudes" in their cowboy hats and boots that get worn once a year.

You could also order your steak following the lead of Dr. Niles Crane, brother of Frasier Crane:

I'd like a, a petit filet mignon, very lean, not so lean that it lacks flavour, but not so fat that it leaves drippings on the plate. And I don't want it cooked - just lightly seared on either side, pink in the middle; not a true pink, but not a mauve either, something in between, bearing in mind the slightest error either way, and it's ruined.

I watched the Last Picture Show for the first time last week. Awesome movie and cool to see young Jeff Bridges in West Texas after watching old Jeff Bridges in Hell or High Water.

I really like the gas station scene when he complains about Mr Pibb instead of Dr Pepper. It's dumb and something most people wouldn't care about or even notice, but it makes it feel more authentic Texan.

Yup. And I liked all the little towns. The New Mexico mountains kept throwing me off though.

Buck Taylor's scene was short but funny.

Funny that "real" cowboys don't like "dudes" wearing boots or hats.

I was equally disappointed in Sicario: Day of the Soldado when the story picks up in McAllen and there are mountains... then again mountain, in Corpus Christi.

Dammit Sheridan... you're from Texas. Act like it.

This only happens online. I've never seen a real "cowboy" as you say give more than a 1/4 second glance at a "fake" cowboy. Real cowboys have more **** going on in life that keeps them occupied without having to worry about the Jones choice of clothing. Only the real cowboys on texags worry about stuff like that.

For a more in depth discussion, we'll need to head on over to the "western boot thread" or "help me buy a hat" thread.

That episode made he really dislike Niles & Frasier intensely.

Same thing in 1883, they are somewhere around Lawton, OK and the mountains on the show are huge. Definitely bigger than the Wichita Mountains found around there
