Looking for recommendations for a bipod for a .270 Winchester for elk and mule deer. With an attached bipod, are they only big enough for prone shooting or can you use from a sitting position? Looking to balance size and weight for lugging through the mountains

I haven't used one of these personally but I've heard good things. Considering replacing my Harris with one of these.

Depends on where you are hunting. I take a trigger stick. I don't want an attachment because of weight. If you are truck hunting or setting up like the movies a bipod is great.

Everyone I have seen or shot my self has been off hand or leaning on a person, tree or bag. Out to 350 yards.

Why not shooting sticks if you'll be sitting/kneeling /standing ?

I carried a simple cabelas monopod on my 1st hunt a couple of years ago - the only elk I saw was at 400+ and I'm not ashamed to admit that I couldn't get it steady enough without something solid for a 2nd anchor point to brace it against. I wouldn't have taken the shot even if I had had a bigger window of opportunity because it was too unsteady.

The versatility of the hatch or atlas looks interesting. I like the idea of it being attachable quickly and not being a permanent mount

I would consider shooting sticks if you have recommendations for a set that would also serve as decent walking stick that the legs locked together such that it functioned more like a monopod when not spread for shooting.

I'm still in the research stage - my engineering background makes me analyze these things way more than is prob necessary

Get a Harris Swivel Notched 9-13" or 12-25".

Way lighter and easier to carry than any trigger stick. Shot my first elk on one of these. Granted you probably won't make a 400 yarder on these but they're great for being light and for quick shots.

I use a Javelin bipod. With whatever model I have, you can't make a seated shot without a good stump or a backpack for support. About 50% of my shots out west I've been able to lay prone and use it.

I use a Harris on my heavy rifles, but the Javelin is great for hunting.

This. Quick to attach when needed. Very solid. I've smoked several critters with this bipod under my rifles. I use the same rail on the stock for my rifles and plug and play.

Latest was NM at 749 yards.

That looks like a great set-up. I miss my Eberlestock with scabbard.

I've been happy with the Magpul bipod so far. And it's a bit cheaper than some options.

Also I have these on my trekking poles. Already carrying the poles usually so no penalty to add them. I've shot off them at the range some but need more practice

I was in the same situation last year. I would not take that shot personally unless I could get prone and shoot off my bag. I like the tall trigger stick bipod for glassing mostly.

Truth is we practice to 500 but we have had better luck in the trees. 3 of 5 we took last year were shot under 100 yards.

For my elk hunt this year I carried a Harris bipod that went to 13" and it was basically worthless. Most of the time I encountered grass that was too tall. I would recommend something that allows you to shoot from the kneeling or sitting position. My guide ended up making me shooting sticks out of some branches. They felt solid enough to where I was prepared for a 400-500 yard shot.
