I started with a Daisy Red Rider then a Daisy Winchester when I was a kid. Both spring.

Looking to get him a pump type. Classic Crossman? He's 12.

Daisy Red Ryder. Duh.

But that's just my opinion.

12?

Kid should be well past bb gun stage.

Atleast a high powered pellet gun, like a Benjamin/Sheridan.

At 12, is when my Grand dad gave all his grand kids their 1st Marlin 336.

Benjamin-Sheridan. I grew up in a house with an anti mom. My dad was able to swing a Benjamin for me, and I wore out the gasket on it sitting in my backyard rattling Dr. Pepper cans.

Besides, the kid with an air gun can shoot a hundred rounds for the price of a few in any powder gun.

The Benjamin/Sheridans mentioned above are not BB rifles. They are designed for pellets. Pellets are fairly inexpensive, but definitely more expensive than BB's. BTW - Sheridan has been gone for a number of years, so you cannot buy a new Sheridan. Benjamin as a company is also gone, but Crosman still sells a number of Benjamin models.

The Crosman 760 is probably the classic BB rifle you are thinking about. It has been around for many decades. Another classic is the Daisy 880. I would recommend the 880, as it has a rifled barrel (760 is smoothbore), and a longer pump arm which gives a slightly better mechanical advantage.

If for some reason you change your mind and want to purchase a pump-type pellet rifle, then the Benjamin multi-pump is the first one to consider. However, they are considerably more expensive than a multi-pump BB rifle, and more expensive than some break-barrel springers, and louder at high power than a break-barrel springer.

Just remember that BB's are much more prone to bouncing back towards the shooter.........

For something a little outside the box, consider a fully automatic DPMS SBR. You can buy them straight off Amazon. My sons love the one I bought them.

I know you said it's your nephew, are his parents familiar at all with guns/gun safety, or are you gonna be the primary source of that kind of training?

Just my two cents, but others have made a very blanket statement that a 12 year old should be ready for something bigger and better than a BB gun, but if he's never been exposed to any kind of gun, then I think you're on the right track. Not all of us were fortunate enough to have parents and grandparents that got us into shooting at a young age.

The Crosman Pumpmaster is what I started out with 20 something years ago. Still have it, and it still works like a champ. It'll shoot both bbs and pellets, and is reasonably accurate but won't be more gun than a beginner needs. Leaves plenty of room for bigger and better things once he's ready.

I got my 760 when I was 10... do the math... anyway after 47 years still have it, still shoot it!

The don't make it anymore, they have that powerline model I think with a longer lever to pump. I would get that. at 8 to 10 pumps is very lethal!

Cant go wrong with that!!!!!

I stand corrected, they do make it, but they did make the lever longer....

I've got an 880 that sits by the back door to kill the occasional rat that decides to come out on the patio. Those get whacked with BBs. the rats in the evening that climb the tree to get in the bird feeders get taken out with a pellet.

It's well more than 40 years old and is as lethal today as it was when I got it.

I started my son with a crossman pellet rifle at age 7. By age 9 he was shooting a .410 side by side that seemed like $100 a shot. I got him into a 20 ga as soon as possible.

He also shot any of our 22 rifles as he wanted along the way. He loves to shoot and is a great shot. One of my favorite things to do, is shoot with him.

Red Ryder.
I have bought at least 20 of these. I give them for childrens gifts all the time. Even given a few at baby showers.

Spot on. His parents are kinda woke but good people. Know absolutely nothing about firearms whatsoever. They gave me permission to train him in a safe responsible manner. The gun stays at my house until we're all comfortable with his level of awareness. I'd also like him to take the NRA Hunter Safety course as I believe many of the aspects of firearm safety relate to other walks of life.

Might just buy that damn machine gun for myself tho…

I watched several you tube videos on the full auto BB guns. They were all of grown men with smiles from ear to ear so I bought myself one for Christmas. I bought it on sale from the Crosman website. With a coupon code from the honey app I paid $135. It comes with a free hat and 6000 free bbs. I'm taking it to the deer lease this weekend to see if it will bring a smile to my face!

Be the cool uncle. Buddy has one of these and there hasn't been a tree rat yet that's hit the ground still kicking. Trash pandas will kick for a few seconds.

Poke around on the Pyramyd Air site a while.

Here's the Benji multipump still made in America:

Umarex is a good importer. They're in Arkansas like the Daisy people. I have this one:

Trump will fix it.
