Howdy OB,

I may be taking a new job soon in Galveston in Jan and am looking for a place to live. Do y'all know of any homes that are available for rents besides what's on Zillow or realtor.com. I'm 33, a single engineer with no kids or rib, looking to spend around $1,500/Month

Would feel better renting from a fellow Ag. Also open to any Recs on places in League City, Friendswood, or other spots close by.

Open to apartments as well but would prefer a larger area.

Thanks in advanced y'all.

Sorry to hear that…

Disclaimer, I was born and partially raised in Galveston.

Even with the nostalgia and pride I feel when visiting, I can't think of a more miserable place in Texas to live, other than DFW….

Condolences OP. Hope you find a way out of that position very soon.

Avoid realtor.com. They are woke and will not show certain stats that help you make a good decision.

Good luck!

Call Joe Tramonte Realty. Just about every for sale or for rent sign on the island has their name on it.

They were the ones that found the rentals for me and all my friends when I lived there while in school.

Age? Married? Got any money? Ever live in a small poor town? Where were you raised? How long do you expect to be at this job? Like bars and clubs? Answer these and we can help you. However, Galveston county is now full, move to El Paso.

I visit family every year and also enjoy my visits. Couldn't live there though.

If it was me I'd embrace island life and rent a bay house on a canal and spend my nights fishing the lights and days paddle boarding or kayaking the canals looking for bachelorette parties renting places for the weekend.

Absolutely love living in Galveston!

I agree with contacting Joe T, but also might want to reach out to Tom's Galveston Real Estate. They have a lot of residential rentals listed on the island.

Fifth generation Galvestonian here... I've lived in Galveston my entire live, except for the four years I lived in CS for school. I, as well as many of my friends from high school have intentionally have moved back to the island to raise our families and better the community. Most of us own or run businesses and have found great success. With that being said... I would highly recommend the west end of the island, anything past 99th street. Without knowing your monthly budget for housing it's hard to make more specific suggestions, but this part of the island is the most enjoyable IMO. Great for outdoor living such as fishing, beach life, golf, golf cart cruising, bike riding, and the Laffite's Cove nature preserve is nice. I'm 41 years old and have raised two kids in the public school system here without any issues whatsoever. If you start to narrow down your search please feel free to DM me for more pointed questions. Welcome to the island!

It's not even close to the most miserable place in Texas.

Many valley towns are a shambles. Take a Google street view drive around Weslaco.

Visit Robstown. Lock up. It may live up to its name.

Anything near Beaumont and Port Arthur.

Galveston does have a mix of old houses that have been fully restored and are lovely next to houses that need to be bulldozed, but there are people working to renovate and rent out those types of places.

Sorry you had a bad time there. It's not that bad.

Don't ever go to the east side of any major city. It might be more than you can handle.

Come on guys, winky face on the post, dig at DFW. Can you not read the subtle sarcasm in the post.

I love my hometown. But I hate the humidity, and prefer the lake to the bay/beach.

Also, I lived in Calallen for a couple of years as well. I know all about Robstown. Had to go there for sports in Middle School.

We lived on 32nd and O in Galveston, I can handle myself just fine in the roughest parts of any city. I rode my bike all over that island until we left when I was 12. My entire family on both sides were BOI all the way back through my Grandparents. My great grandparents, all 4 sets, moved to the island between the mid 30's and mid 40's. Half of those came from Eagle Pass, Yoakum, or Gonzales.

Get on the waiting list at Sandpiper Cove. It's the hottest place to live on the rock right now.

I missed the winky face. Sorry.

I have family that lives very close to where you lived in Galveston.

The whole "I was BOI" thing that some galvestonians hold onto is weird. I've heard it mentioned at social gatherings.

These people are confused. Galveston had its good points but it's not like Hawaiians that were BOI and are not WASP. BOI in Galveston is not a free pass to Heaven or tremendous wealth but they sure have people that believe that. Really strange.

The only thing that's really strange is that you've totally missed and overblown the meaning of BOI.

Not really. There are people that are pretty snooty about it.

These could help. Single, 33, engineer/procurement, never lived in a small town but have been around them my entire life. Should be there a year. Over clubs but enjoy hole in the wall watering holes. Honestly just excited to get out of the city.

I'll update the original post too

One year isn't really enough time to work yourself into the community there. Lots of townies and folks that have been there for decades, hard to break into those circles in just a year. Either live on the west end in a bay house, or get an apartment on Nasa 1 and 45. Don't live in the main part of Galveston. Some folks love living on the island. Some hate it. Not a lot of inbetween. Personally, I did not like it, but this isn't about me.

I think he is referring to the fact realtor.com is not longer providing crime rate statistics to better promote "equitable housing". It is a fair point if I was moving to a new town.

There are hole in the wall bars at every intersection in Galveston county. Hope you enjoy smoking or being around those that have had no less than 2 packs a day for 50 years straight.

Wife and I graduated from TAMUG. I always liked Galveston, Winter more than Summer because it was mostly just locals. We were down there last weekend. It is nice to be able to go to wharf and buy fresh seafood at half the cost it would be at Central Market in Austin.

There are plenty of doctors and nurses around the med center. I've had friends live on the strand and in a stilt houses near downtown (north of Broadway). Could be fun for a year if you find some friends to hit all those salty bars.

I might look at living around Webster, NASA, or Friendswood, though. It may be easier to find 'normal' people there.

Nowadays I'd probably be more of a west ender, but 33 and still single? I'm probably looking in the downtown area, loft apartment or something close by.

I enjoyed my time on the island, parents are still there and I don't think you could drag them off in a casket. It's a disease when you've been there too long.

ETA: I'd tell you which ones to avoid but with that budget you could get 4-5 of my college apartments.

I thought it would be really cool to go into townie bars, have a drink and meet really interesting people. Turns out, not every crappy bar is a Jimmy Buffet song waiting to happen. Most are full of old sad drunks that really don't have anyplace better to be.

Realtor.com announced it themselves. It's a fair point about what search sites to consider to get legit info.

Sorry I know it is cool to bag on Galveston. I lived there on the main part of island for about 2.5 years, half of that time by myself TDY for work the other half my wife moved down and we lived on the island. We really enjoyed it. Now we didn't have any kids at the time and I am sure that would have changed my opinion some.

Do it you can always move to the mainland if you don't like it.
