My kids are readers and I read to them every night before bed. I'm not always a fan of the content but the sense of fantasy and adventure is intriguing to them. Given who I am and what I'd like to instill in my children, Ive been looking for a way to bring our worlds together. Since they're not quite ready for my Louis L'Amour collection, I was struggling.

Well, yesterday I ran across these & bought the hunting series & workbooks. With Christmas coming, I thought a few of you with younger kids might like to know about them.

My son went through a huge Gary Paulson phase when he was 9 or 10

Looks like he just passed last month. I read Hatchet but will buy the rest of his books for them next year.

I liked all of the Jim Kjelgaard books when I was a kid. Big Red, Irish Red, Stormy, etc. The titles sound like a list of stripper autobiographies, but they are fun outdoors books about some pretty cool dogs.

These are favorites in our house. Found them at a Texas Trophy Hunters event, I think they're based in Dallas.

Mine loved the Kevin Lovegreen books. We are reading some of the Little House on the Prairie books now. Great insight into how hard life was for the pioneers.

We read a lot of Baxter Black poems. Some are funny, some are sad, but they are all really good.

Learning to memorize and/or recite speeches is a great skill for kids to learn.

My son got me to read Hatchet, and I gave him No Easy Day. He's now reading American Sniper.

Where the Red Fern Grows is IMO the #1 outdoor book for kids. Call of the Wild and White Fang by Jack London and the Jim Kjelgaard books would all be high on the list too.

Here is one I feel like most people don't know about...

Devil's Bridge

It is a book about a kid in a fishing tournament up in Cape Cod...loved it as a kid and have now read it to my own kids.

Cynthia DeFelice is the author. She has another, more recent book, called "Wild Life" about a boy and a bird dog out on the run. My kids loved that one as well!

We've been through all of Gary Paulsen's books...as well as Far Side of the Mountain and several others!
