Looking to purchase my first skiff next year and was wondering if anyone here had experience with Sabine skiffs? Spoke to Brian a while back and am looking at the Versatile, but have never ridden on one. Will be used mostly for chasing reds with a fly rod, but I'd also mount a trolling motor in case buddies wanted to fish conventional tackle as well.

I plan on calling around for a guide that fishes one so I can try it out firsthand, but figured I'd ask the board as well.

Are you in the market for a friend who brings beer, gas money, and can work the push pole?

There is one or two guys on here who have them. I'm sure one will chime in soon.

Yep, been on a few and looked at them. A few friends have them and can probably get you a ride on one without the guide fees. Or if you'd prefer to try some different models/builders we can do that too.

Not to derail, but I've never charged anyone for gas on my skiff and won't start, however the other two items are in high demand, especially the last one. That's a skill most people think they can do, until they try.

To AgFlyGuy's point, I would always accept the first and last! Y'all feel free to derail. Could talk about this stuff all day.

I'm pretty green in skiff world. Hell I've never owned a saltwater boat before, but grew up on a lake with ski, runabouts, pontoons etc. I was interested in the Sabine to save myself some of the heartache from tearing up the hull on oysters as a novice, but I'm all ears on other makes you guys like.

I'll shoot you a PM with my cell #. I've got a fly tournament this weekend but after that can likely get you set up with a few to test out.

I have a Sabine Versatile. Tunnel hull with 60hp Tohatsu. Fantastic rig. And been on several of them. @PalomaPachonga on here has one too.

What do you want to know?

I'm not putting words in MBL's mouth but I've never "charged" anyone for gas either but had friends insist on chipping in. For friends that tie flies I'll tell them to tie me some flies instead of worrying about gas.

Definitely having a friend able to pole the boat is a big plus for sure.

Think my biggest concern is ride quality vs other popular makes and how that changes with console vs tiller for someone with lower back issues. Second would be what changes, if any, you'd make to your rigging if you had to do it over.

I've fished on a Sabine several times over the last few years but just had mine for about a month.

I went with a CC because of the managing the tilt/trim/jack-plate on a tunnel vs. a tiller. But, I've got lower back problems too (2 herniated discs- L4/L5 & L5/S1) so I like to run standing up. I'm 6'3" and the console is at a good height for that for me.

The ride is great. I mean, it's still a skiff with low freeboard and pretty much zero deadrise. But the bow cuts the waves well and it's got huge spray rails. It's not going to ride as nice as say a Hells Bay Professional or Marquesas or an East Cape Evo but the Sabine will float skinnier. I'd liken it most to a Hells Bay Guide. The main difference being the Guide is 18'4" while the Sabine is 17'6"- but the Guide has sponsons and the Sabine doesn't.

You can't overcome physics but you can make the ride more comfortable in a chop by adjusting your tabs and speed.

I don't have mine really loaded out, that defeats the purpose. But it's also not bare bones either. The main thing is the trolling motor which I generally take off but given the supply chain issues I went ahead and had it installed now vs. trying to get it later on. I also got a removable leaning post for the poling platform. I don't really need it when I'm up there but my knees are jacked and don't like to bend so the post provides a great handle to help getting up & down.

Now put a cup holder on that sissy bar for the platform!

I can pole it one-handed (#thatswhatshesaid). One for the beer and one for the push pole.

This is extremely helpful. Thank you. I've got a herniated disc (L4/L5) so really thought standing would be the best way for me to run it (my knees are still good so that helps). I'm not as tall as you, though, so if you can stand with a console then that's probably my preferred route as well. Skiff looks awesome, by the way, and essentially exactly what I had in mind.

One of my misses when I built my skiff but they make these, so you can drink, pole, and fish!

Edit - reading is hard...I see you have a tunnel (thus the CC for tilt/trim/jackplate). Thanks again for the info.

Looks like a fun boat. Recently I have gravitated towards simple rigs and ease of use on boats. Less stuff to break and fix and more time on the water.

What motor did you choose? How fast does it get up on plane?

Congratulations OP. That's a nice looking rig.

Yep agree with this sentiment. It's a Tohatsu 60. This is the lowest powered boat I've owned, but the hole shot is pretty dang good in my opinion. I was very pleasantly surprised. Feels more like my turbo jet ski than my old runabout. It also stays on plane at extremely slow speed, which I wasn't expecting either.

I went and shopped/compared options at Brian's shop a few weeks ago and got to see your boat while it was in its final stages.

Great looking rig!

Probably bringing Brian a check in the next month or so

Thanks! There are a lot of great boats out there, including Sabines. Chose mine because Brian is a great guy that makes a great boat and he's right in my back yard. You won't regret it!

Saw this Sabine skiff for sale in case any of y'all are in the market. Looks like a solid deal.
