May make a couple of weekend runs with a buddy and his kids over the next several weeks to fish a bit.

Any suggestions on rigs and bait? Not really aiming for any specific haul but just want to get some lines in the water.

I would think dead shrimp on bottom will always catch something. Probably hardheads and such but maybe some whiting

Thanksgiving time can bring the croaker and whiting into the surf. Good old dead shrimp on a double drop. Will have to shake off some hardheads, but that comes with the territory.

At the jetties use rings of dead squid and catch plenty of sheepies, mangrove snapper, and whiting. The squid is tougher and harder for the bait stealers to take.

Get a whole bunch of 1/2-3/4oz sinkers and a 3-way swivel. Use inexpensive 8-10# mono as a dropper off the swivel with the weight. Then use heavier line off the other side of the swivel to a 1/0 circle hook. The third part of the swivel goes to your main line. Bait up the squid, lob it out as far as you can go, let it sink to the bottom, and slowly bounce it back to you. You will catch sheepies and mangroves for sure. But you'll also get hung up a lot which is why the weight is run to a light piece of mono so you can break it off easily and just sacrifice the weight.

Fish Bites on a double drop pompano rig is a go to for me in the surf. I usually put a different color on each hook. Pink and green work well. Shrimp, crab and squid are all good.

On a good calm day the pompano will be around the second or third bar. Contrary to popular opinion, you don't need to peel the shrimp, and live works well for the bigger pomps.

Good tips

I've been out there a few times in the summer. Good to know there's still some action in the Fall.

Bull reds will still be out there if you can cast a mullet chunk out on a big surf rod.
