When I was younger (70s & 80s) we used to buy summer sausage that I remember being really good…. but I can't recall the name. From what I remember it was, 'Wrath' or maybe 'Wrathe' and I seem to remember the image of an Indian head dress profile on the label.

Does anyone on the OB remember this summer sausage?

If not, do you have one you recommend?

Thanks in advance OB.

I don't know the one you mention, but I suggest going to your local meat market for summer sausage. They always seem to be better than stuff you get at the grocery store.

Rath Packing Company of Waterloo, Iowa. I remember it well from back when I was a kid and my part time job working in a grocery store/meat market. Ceased operations in 1984.

Thanks DargelSkout. Didn't think of that. Good suggestion.

Just Googled it. Apparently they went out of business in the mid 80s.

HEB has its own HEB brand summer sausage, and also Slovacek's and Prasek's. I think I got Slovacek's most recently and it was plenty good.

Don't worry. I used Duck Duck Go and found out they closed in the mid 80s.

I like all three of these and usually just rotate among them. All three are a little different from each other, but all three are good. I recently noticed that the local HEB was now carrying summer sausage from Bellville Meat Market. I thought it was really good, too.

Anybody remember when The Three Stooges were hungry on the ship at sea with the Russian spy and he wouldn't give them any of his summer sausage?

When I was a young kid K-Mart sold some DAK summer sausage from Denmark and it was pretty good. These days, I'll take any kind as long as it's beef, pork or a mix of the two.

Yes there is. I have had some dried out crumbly crap that was terrible.

Well, the reason I made the post was the summer sausage I got this weekend at Randalls in Austin just wasn't very good. Too greasy, and the flavor wasn't one that I cared for. Maybe I got a bad batch, but I'm not a fan of the Nueske's brand from Randalls.

We used to eat some Eckridge summer sausage, when I was a kid, that was good. It had kind of a tangy taste. My Grampa would always get it. So whenever I find it now, I think of him. Some HEB stores still carry it.

HEB carries their dry sausage also, and it is great for a non-venison sausage.

I take my deer to Praseks to have summer sausage made. Their off the shelf summer sausage is good also.
I've tried a few other local meat markets and found some to be rather greasy.
Surprisingly i grew up eating the hormel summer sausage from the grocery store and still get it occasionally.

Can't believe any of you don't make your own, with the exception of the chemist. Used to have it made in Muenster, but for the last 20 years, have made our own. Made a smoker out of a big metal cabinet, insulated it with concrete board. 60-40 deer -pork. I do still get the seasoning and cure from Hess meat in Muenster. Recipe hasn't changed for the last 3 owners. Smoke with peach about 2.5 hours, then hold the heat at 180 till done, 155. Makes the store bought pretty bad.

I like Praseks and Bellville. Edge goes to Bellville because they don't put whole peppercorns in the sausage. I hate those teeth breakers.

My all time favorite was from Saunder's Sausage Farm. It was on Highway 6 between College Station and Texas World Speedway.
