Wife and I want to get our son a "Power Wheels" tractor or truck for his birthday. I've read mixed reviews online about certain brands and sizes. What seems to be the most problematic is driving in grass and lack of traction with the plastic tires and lack of weight.

Anyone have any good recommendations on a toy our son could buzz around the backyard on?

We have a Peg Perego gator that the boys have loved. I like that it has a bed so I can make them haul stuff for me. Traction is an issue, but we solved it by putting rocks in the back

Got mine a ride on Jeep and it's a waste, even with all the bells and whistles. In grass it barely can get up and go because it "creeps" up to speed. On concrete it's fine and actually is fast too speed but anything off road is no good.

We have the 2 seat 12v gator. Love it. You need a 2 wheel drive to handle thick grass. Adding bicycle tire treads and JB Weld those on will help add real tread to the slick tires.

Our oldest will upgrade for Christmas and the youngest will get the 12V.

The boys like to follow me around doing chores.

This was a photo we took so he could fertilize the yard like the farmers I fly drones with do. Some of the best memories we have is those boys running around with that gator.

ETA: Yes, it's real fertilizer and he did a good job.

I cut a couple bike tires and screwed them into the plastic wheels. I also rigged up a 36v mobility scooter battery to it and it will now run about 35 mph.

We have a Power Wheels Desert Racer. It's great on concrete and ok on a dirt road or short grass that's not thick. In St Augustine it bogs down some but can get through it. The only thing I can't stand is how loud the plastic wheels are on concrete. I think I'm going to change the pink details/stickers to something a little more manly for my boy once he gets old enough to drive it. May do something different on the wheels to try to quiet it down a little.

Pedal tractors are better at wearing the kids out.

Thanks for the responses, I've looked at the 12V camo Gator. Oddly enough many people have adapted with bike tires, horizontal rubber strips, etc to gain traction. We do have thick St. Augustine, but with some weight and Agro engineering I think it'll serve it's purpose.

We're Polish, we'll figure something out.

we have good luck in the grass. One thing I learned is when it is in low, only one tire spins, in high gear both spin.

We got one of these bad boys for our little girls (Theirs is pink). It's 24 Volts and is crazy heavy as it is built very well. Only issue is two kids can't fit on it when they get bigger.

We went this rout because we wanted something they could actually ride out in the country in any terrain. It's hard to find something with with pneumatic rubber tires like this.

Get a 12 or 24 volt and then do this.

We had the Gator and my oldest loved to haul sand and mulch from the truck to the back yard. It really can be a helpful vehicle for moving things around.

Our boys have three gator and a john deere tractor too. We had the same problem with the gator traction. I screwed a strip of a rubber carpet door mat to the wheels. It made a big difference. We've also used it to haul things around.

Our boy has one of these John Deere Tractor with Trailer.

The kid has put some miles on it. Holds a charge and runs in grass well. Trailer can be helpful moving stuff around.

Highly recommend.

Followed this guy's process but used Ryobi batteries. Used 2" pvc as insert to battery terminal
