Can one of our resident regulations experts straighten out a question? At one time it was illegal to whack them, but my understanding all their protections were rescinded. Correct or not? I see hunts for them advertised.

I am not sure what the technical term is for what happened with the legislation but they're legal to shoot now. I shot one last summer near Junction.

Still eating on mine. At one point they were considered extinct but apparently the Texas herd they reintroduced into Ethiopia are thriving.

Yes, politicians made a bonehead decision and banned them for a year or two. Extremely dumb on their part. The already thriving population kept growing. Now we are back to where we were before and those idiots accomplished nothing.

I believe the correct term is extirpated but same thing. Right before they implemented that law ranchers were killing massive herds for pennies on the dollar. I was mad I missed out an opportunity to kill a bull or cow for $1,000.

Sort of ironic that the hunting industry has helped several species from extinction and has been the source for reintroduction for many as well. Proud to be a conservationist!

Thai cannot be emphasized enough. Texas has saved many multiple majestic species.

If someone has a spare cape I'd be forever grateful. My taxidermist completely botched mine and I've wanted to get it redone for years. It was supposed to be on a pedestal wall mount and ended up a normal shoulder mount but looks like crap.

Actually the dumb law affected Scimtar, Addax and Lechwe. We had Addax and sold most of them. Years before our ranch and the Kyle Ranch in Bandera donated some animals to be shipped back to their homelands where they were almost extinct. You know... them high fence ranches in Texas are bad.

My old neighboring ranch had a bunch of scimitars with broken horns. He might sell A hunt on one cheap. You want me to ask him?

Sure. I dont even care about horns. I have my 40 inchers so I just need a cape. Hell id be fine splitting the meat with someone cause I don't even have freezer space!

I tried a couple of years ago to get a good hunt for TTHA from this fellow. He is an absentee landowner and let is Scimitar herd get kinda out of hand. I asked him then if he wanted to get rid of some of them and he would not make up his mind. He is a t-sip but a pretty good guy. Give me a couple of days to run him down and I will respond back on this thread.

Sorry for the delay. The taxidermist friend said he has a couple of Scimitar capes. He ask me if yours was a bull or cow and about what size he is.. Hope this gets to you sir.

Here it is. I paid for a pedestal shoulder mount and a year plus later this is what I got. I've never been happy about it at all. You can't even see all the jacked up spots.

dont even get me started. luckily its like 8 or 9 feet up in an entry way so you cant see it unless youre actually looking for it because you dont really notice the mount until youre well inside the house.

Actually, it looks like it's trying to look at the 2'x2' random stitched up patch on its shoulder

i really have absolutely no clue what he was trying to do. i am pretty sure he screwed it up trying to make the pedestal shoulder mount and then couldnt get it to work but the damage was done. IDK. it has bummed me out eery time i have looked at it for years, and by the time the thing got finished i was just ready to be over with the whole ordeal, which leaves us where we are today.


this is what it was supposed to be and he said it wouldnt fit the mold. it was a whole ordeal

Every time I open this thread - I always initially misread this post that legislators are legal to shoot.

Who was the taxi so none of us use him/her?

It was a guy in Texas City. I want to say bass taxidermy or something. One guy does birds and I have like 5 and they are good and the other guy does large animals and all the ones in the building look fine and there are tons of pics of others so I feel like I just got a bad draw. I was really bummed because I dont hunt trophy animals and I got a hell of a chance to hunt this one and this happened.
