My dad is wanting to learn how to fly fish. And his 60th birthday is coming up, so I thought I'd take him on the Guad this winter to catch a few trout.

Any guide recs for a beginner?

Dylan Mendoza, DM fly fishing. Griff at Living Waters Fly Shop. Both are great guides and great guys.

Some of the best fishing areas are just downriver from White Water on 306. After you learn from the guide and if you ever want to go again, I highly recommend just parking on 306 or at White Water and just wading down river from there. You don't have to go very far unless you want to; lots of the guides all stack up in that area waiting their turn at one of the honey holes.

Wait until the weather cools down and the tube hatch goes away.

I spend a lot of time down there in the winter and interact with a lot of the guides. They're almost all great, but there are a couple of outliers.

One is the guy who runs Lone Star Fly Fishing. It's been discussed on here before so I won't go into his background, but dude is strange. His girlfriend does wade trips, and she's an odd duck as well.

Isn't there a guide down there who killed his mom but got off on the charges somehow?

Heard stories he can be quite annoying while fishing, so might want to avoid that one.

Dang, now I want to hear about expedition outfitters.

For what its worth, as a beginner, Mad River Outfitters has a youtube channel that has been extremely helpful getting started. I watched about 3 hours of video and it got me set up at least enough to start, and have been refining for the last few weeks. I think its going pretty well.

Whoa … I've fished with him before. Caught a few good ones too.

Jesus, I've heard all kinds of stories about the guy and his girlfriends yelling at other people fishing in their holes, etc. but I did not know that back story. Pretty easy to pull up what happened by finding the company website and then googling his name.

The drama that takes place on the guadalupe is pretty annoying. I won't go on a weekend unless it's later in the winter and super cold. Everyone knows there's a few places where the trout stack up every year, some people will sit there all day, which is of course their right. Pretty humorous watching some of the guides getting visibly upset and the person in question takes it way too seriously.
