I've got 6 wild chokecherry trees on the back of my property. I figure each one will produce 2-3 gallons of fruit. I've never cooked with them before and when I look online everything just suggest jams. I'm wondering if anyone experience with them or has any suggestions/recipes?

If your not into jam, maybe an apothecary.

Hell, maybe the world needs more chokecherries

We pick wild ones here, snd put them in my elk summer sausage. Elk, smoked gouda (cubed small), choke cherries, and a few jalapeños. It is outstanding.

I may need to add chokecherry to my list of things I want to work on getting on it place. Doubt I can get huckleberries growing, but may look into blueberries and raspberries.

Wine! Dad went up to Colorado one summer with mom looking for land to buy. Never found anything they wanted, but visiting with one old rancher, they commented on how many chokecherries he had. Told them to pick as many as they could, make chokecherry wine, then come back for hunting season. Said we'll hunt all day and drink wine at night. Never made it back hunting but did make the wine. It was quite good, i you like a drier wine.

I would think syrup would be good and wine. Basically anything youd make with a sour cherry. Jelly etc.

I think they like acidic soil. Wonder if they could be easily started from seed. The more I read about them the more I think it would be good to have a couple trees on the place.

I know nothing about making wine, but maybe I should. I asked the neighbor and has about 40 trees on his property and said I can take them all.

Had an old co-worker who used to make moonshine with them. Also from carrots in his garden...once he got the recipe dialed, it was good stuff

Cherry Bounce!

My grandparents had some in the yard in Louisiana. Always had some Bounce in the back of the pantry for "medicinal" purposes. We'd even get a small shot of it if sick with a cold, etc. - knocked you out as a child!

We've tried it with regular red cherries & done batches with brandy & whiskey. We can't find a source for choke cherries, so it has to do.

40 trees?!?!?! Mind if I ask what area you live in where they grow so well?

Dang - I was hoping they grew somewhere in Texas. Try the Bounce though - it's really delicious!
