Specifically an S&W AR-15 sport with trade of my little used Howa 22-250 varmint/small deer rifle for $400 difference. I feel the AR is an upgrade in home protection and can be used for deer and pig hunting if I ever go again.

Buy one, keep the other for trade for toolbox
Agreed here. Is this a dealer trade in? That's... pretty typical of dealer type trades. M&Ps will probably be around $750 right now, so if you have a $600 howa.... it'll be about $300 trade in and you'll pay $450. That's... normal. If you're talking a friend to friend... and he's saying that the M&P is $1000... he needs to be reevaluated as a friend, haha.BenderRodriguez said:
Yes, you should get an AR.
Not sure on bolt gun pricing but that M&P is on the lower end of the AR spectrum price wise, so just be sure you're not getting hosed on a trade by a guy claiming its worth $1k or something.
Just a courtesy bump so you know it was not missed.TheEyeGuy said:big ben said:

PSA has some pretty solid, deals,on uppers and lowers righ now.
If you are going to be out $400 on this trade, keep the Howa and spend a hundred more and get you a complete AR. Better deal for you.

Trading the Howa and a Heritage .22 LR/Mag for $388 TTL difference on M&P AR-15. Gun store trade. AR listed at $779.00. Really don't need the Howa and Heritage 22 is lesser of other 22LR pistols I own. Just a novice and the AR world is new to me.
We'll probably have to agree to disagree but I don't consider that a "better" gun. It has more features, sure. But the part quality on the M&P is better. Comparing Red Delicious to Granny Smith apples here.aggieforester05 said:
This setup right here would be a better gun. You can get a cheaper combo for $450 + tax and shipping, but the below setup gives you the sights, hand guard, magpul stock/handgrip, and enhanced polished trigger that would all cost you money down the road to upgrade.
PSA EPT MOE Lower $209
PSA 16" Upper M-LOk guard and sights $419.99
So first of, the dealer is probably being fair.matureag said:

Agree here. And full disclosure, two biggest bucks I ever shot were with a 223, and both went down immediately, but the second was such a "if the moon and planets hadn't aligned perfectly" situation that I would have just wounded the big boy and I said never again. That being said, if you ever do decide to get into hunting deer again, it's easy to get a cheap 270 with scope for $500 or so usually so maybe think that way and still do the switchout.agsalaska said:
I have deleted and retyped this a couple of times now.
The answer is probably yes. But understand that hunting with a 5.56 out of an AR platform is not the same as a 22-250 with what I am assuming has a 3x9 on it.
Is a .223 enough for deer. Sure. I mean this is the OB and we kill literally thousands of deer every year with the .223. But it is quite a bit less powerful than a 22-250. And the sights will also be completely different. Hunting with an AR 15 in .223 takes a lot of practice and is more limiting in shot selection than just about everything else you could own.
I don't say that to discourage you, and you mention 'small deer' and 'If I ever go again' so I don't get the sense that it is any priority. But if you do you need to really get to know that gun and use very specific ammunition.

I am really glad I sold those firearms - said no gunowner, ever.
As said eloquently above, why not have both?

Get a 6.5 grendel. Then in the future you can add another upper of your choice that will fit the same lower. 556,6.5, 300blk, they all fit the same lower. I'm a wylde chamber guy since I have tons of both 556 and 223.
Grendel is a great load for your kid and a super round in general. Are you here in CS?

Problem with 6.5 Grendel right now is ammo. Hard to find.
We're inventorying parts right now. Will post them up this weekend.retzy said:
